At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 30th January, Harrison & Hetherington
held their weekly sale of primestock.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – Once again a large show
of 205 cast cows were forward with an ever increasing ring of buyers
ensuring the dearest trade yet. Mr Hunter of Upper Brydekirk sold the
top priced Limousin cross cow for 193.5p bought by Mr David Sandham.
M/s Cornthwaite of Balgray Farm run of Limouin cross cows topped at 185.5p
to Mr Mike Atkinson. Mr Dean of Allerbeck Farm sold the top priced Charollais
cow for 185.5p bought by West Scottish Lamb. Mr Dean also sold the top
overall priced Charolais cow for 1061kg 168.5p £1787 purchased by Mr
John Robertson. M/s Cornthwaite also sold a Limousin cross cow for 183.5p
to Mr Mike Atkinson. M/s Nixon & Sons Ltd of Stotsfold sold a Limousin
cross cow for 183.5p to Mr David Sandham.

Prime Bulls – Once again a mixed show of 95 bulls met a good trade. M/s Dodd of West View sold the top priced Limousin bull for 219.5p bought by Mr Mike Atkinson. M/s Blaylock & Son of Hallburn run of bulls topped at 211.5p for Limousin cross bought by West Scottish. Mr Kirk Hall of Drumpark sold the top priced Limousin bull for 738kg 196.5p £1450 to West Scottish. M/s Wood & Son of Wragmire Bank sold the top priced Holstein cow for 179.5p to Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle – Once again a good show of prime cattle met a great demand. Mr Will Cleasby of Linden House sold two Charolais cross heifers for 225.5p, 223.5p both purchased by Pioneer Foods, M/s Dodd of West View sold the top priced Limousin cross bullock for 223.5p bought by Pioneer Foods. M/s Dodd also sold the top priced Limousin cross heifer for 221.5p to West Scottish Lamb. Mr Andrew Jefferson of Aspatria Hall sold a Charolais cross heifer for 677kg 215.5p £1458 to Pioneer Foods. Mr Geoff Batey of High Knells Farm bullocks topped at 212.5p bought by Mr David Sandham.

Prime Hoggs – A total of 2440 head were forward consisting of 2181 prime hoggs and 259 ewes. Prime hoggs again met a good demand throughout with 37-43kg hoggs again achieving top rates; 44-47kg hoggs were also sharper on the week being £2 to £3 dearer. Top price of the day was paid for a heavy Suffolk hogg shown by M/s AF&UE Armstrong of Townhead Farm which sold for £120 to Mr Michael Bowe. Top price per kilo was paid for four marvellous Beltex cross hoggs from M/s W Murray & Sons of Prior House they sold at 288.6ppk (37kg £106.80) to Mr Robert Skelton. The average for the top 517 export sheep was a staggering 249.7 pence per kilo.
Also today was the Annual Show and Sale of Prime Blackfaced & Swaledale Hoggs.
The show was kindly and very ably judged by Mr James Thompson of Vion Foods Ltd who awarded the Championship to the 1st prized pen of Blackfaced hoggs from M/s W Tod of Glenshanna, Westerkirk with a pen of 10 weighing 44kg they sold at £91 to Mr Andrew Dawson.

Reserve Champions also came from the Blackfaced class consigned by M/s Wilson of Street Head weighing 42.5kg, they sold at £85 to West Scottish Lamb. The first prize pen of Swales was consigned by Messrs Moscrop & Waugh of Albyfield, weighing 41kg they sold at £78 per head to West Scottish Lamb.
