Borderway
Christmas Primestock |
|
| Monday 5th December 2011 |
At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 5th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
The Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Cattle was extremely well supported with 76 cattle forward for the days judge Owen Llyr to choose from. The show was kindly sponsored by Armstrong Watson and John Scott.
A superb entry of 266 prime cows met another very strong demand for all classes, despite deadweight prices falling. A marvellous show of top quality, fed, export type cows was on offer and judge Owen Llyr backed his own choice, purchasing the 1st prize continental cow; a pure British Blue from Messrs Brough of Buckabank which made 237.5p/kg, scaled 920kgs and realised £2185. The 2nd prize continental cow came from Messrs Henderson of Park House Farm, with another pure British Blue which made the day’s second top price per kg at 233.5p scaling 758kgs and coming to £1769.93. This was also bought by Mr Owen Llyr.
A large entry of 116 young bulls consisted of the best selection of
continental bulls seen for some time. The sale was topped at 221.5p/kg
for a Limousin cross bull from Messrs Jardine of The Yett, Lockerbie
which was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Top price per head of £1595.80
was achieved by the 1st prize continental bull consigned by Messrs Pattinson
of Kinkry Hill whose British Blue bull scaled 808kgs, made 197.5p/kg
and was purchased by the judge, Mr Owen Llyr.
Black and White bulls were a marvellous trade, selling to 178.5 and 177.5p/kg
for Holstein/Friesians from Messrs Graham, Wallhead purchased by Bowlands
Foods and Mr Mike Atkinson respectively.

Prior to the sale, judge Mr Owen Llyr awarded the Harrison and Hetherington Perpetual Trophy for the Champion animal to Messrs Bell of Farbroom with an outstanding, home-bred Limousin cross steer. Born in July 2010, this animal is sired by the registered Limousin sire Fieldson Alfy and is out of a British Blue cow. No stranger to the show circuit, he already has winning tickets to his credit lifting the red ticket at Westmorland Show, was placed 5th in his class at the recent Borderway Agri Expo and 4th prize and highest placed exhibitor bred in class at Countryside Live. This steer went on to make 275p/kg (£1773.75) and was purchased by Mr J Mulholland, Butcher, Great Orton.

The Reserve Champion was awarded to a superb Limousin cross heifer from
