A great entry of sheep was forward at Kirkby Stephen Mart on Tuesday night, consisting of 2,526 prime lambs and 279 cast ewes & rams.

The annual Christmas show was held in which an outstanding show, both prime cattle & lambs were on offer being a credit to all vendors.

British Blue Heifer consigned by Messrs A D & A Richardson, Bank End

The prime cattle judge Mr Robert Dickinson awarded his overall championship to a tremendous British Blue Heifer consigned by Messrs A D & A Richardson, Bank End which weighed 588kg and sold for £2,587.20 (440p/kg) and was purchased by A J & F M Harrison, Grange Hall.  The reserve champion was awarded to a superb Limousin Heifer consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, which went on to realise £1,724.80 (280p/kg) and was purchased by R I Brown, Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.

The total entry of prime cattle averaged an excellent 286.4p/kg or £1,520.77

There was a cracking show of over 40 pens presented to the judge Mr James Thompson, who awarded the championship honours to a wonderful pen of 6 Beltex lambs consigned by Messrs A M & H V Brown, Beechwood House which later went on to sell for £150 (300p/kg) to Andrew Atkinson.  The reserve lamb championship went to a great pen of 6 Texel lambs from Messrs J C Bainbridge, Bonnygate, which later went on to fetch £112 selling to Geoff Riley

All classes of lambs were very good to sell with trade being similar to last week’s highs with some vendors reporting an increase on the week.  Many smart pens of continental cross lambs regularly exceeded the 220p/kg mark.  Many pens of heavier weighted mule lambs were in great demand often exceeding 160p/kg
