At Kirkby Stephen Mart on Tuesday night Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Christmas show and sale of Primestock at which there were 3,163 prime sheep and 11 prime cattle forward for sale.

A superb show of Christmas primestock cattle were presented before the judge Mr Martin Carefoot, Preston. The championship was awarded to a magnificent Limousin heifer consigned by Messrs A D & A Richardson Ltd, Low Bank End, Appleby, the heifer selling for a centre record 409.50p/kg (£2436.53) to Messrs J W Dent & Sons, Naby View.
Standing in reserve was a superb Limousin heifer consigned by Messrs G Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside, the heifer later selling for 284.50p/kg (£1505.01) to G A Steadman Butchers, Sedbergh.
Messrs Stevenson, Howgill foot’s prize winning heifer topped at 254.50p/kg (£1486.28) to Messrs Carefoot whilst another quality heifer from Messrs H W & J Birkbeck, Castle Hill sold for 249.50p/kg (£1267.46) to Messrs N & J Dowding Butchers Appleby.
Topping the steer class was a marvellous Limousin consigned by Messrs Stevenson, Howgill Foot which later sold for 221.50p/kg (£1444.18) to Messrs R I Brown Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.

Sheep trade throughout the sale was tremendous with plenty of lambs 180 to 210 pence. Mule lambs were regular 160 to 170 pence with Swaledale regularly 160 pence. The overall sale average of 168.91p is outstanding. Top price of the day was £134 for a pen of 6 Beltex lambs consigned by Messrs J W Watson, Whygill Head purchased by R I Brown Butchers, Kirkby Stephen, these were also the top price of the day at 282.10p/kilo.

The pre sale sheep show was very well judged by Paul Bartholomew of Vivers Scotlamb who had an outstanding 48 pens of sheep to cast his eyes over eventually awarding the championship to 6 Beltex Lambs consigned by Messes D & C E Marston, Easegill Head, later selling for £100 (238.10p/kg) and were purchased by the judge.
Reserve champion lambs went to Messrs H R Hayton & Son, Asby Grange who’s Beltex lambs made £100 (218.80p/kg) purchased by Gavin Little Butchers, Penrith.
