Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their annual Christmas Primestock show and sale of cattle and sheep on Monday 7th December at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

A total of 280 prime cattle, bulls and cows were forward which included the annual Christmas Show, this year judged by Mr Jim Mullholland, The Butcher, Great Orton.

M/s Bell of Farbroom won the overall Champion prize with a Limousin cross bullock which sold to top the sale at 280p 725kg £2030 and sold to the judge Mr Jim Mullholland. The winning animal was a homebred black steer shown by Chris Bell. Sired by the registered Limousin bull Rossignol and bred out of a British Blue cross mother, this steer is not stranger to the showring. Earlier in the year he won Champion of Champions at Skelton Show and on his only outing in 2008 he won his class in the Baby Beef class at Countryside Live.

The reserve Champion rosette went to M/s Dodd of West View for their Limousin cross heifer which sold for 260p 527kg £1370.20 also bought by Jim Mullholland, the butcher. Their red heifer, sired by the registered home bred bull Redrock Baron, and was bred from a Limousin cross mother.

M/s Hunter of Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin heifer for 251.5p 579kg £1456.19 to M/s Harrison. M/s L Skelton & Son of Low House Farm run of cattle averaged 208.8p/kilo and topped at 225.5p & 221.5p for British Blue cross heifers, both being purchased by Castlebank Butchers.

Prime Bulls
A great show of bulls were forward with Mr Brian Hall of Ainstable Hall’s run of 17 bulls averaging 171.5p 723kg £1239 and topped at 190p 794kg £1512.57 for a British Blue selling to Owain Llyr. Mr Hall also sold the leading price per head at 185.5p 821kg £1522.16 also for a British Blue cross selling to Owain Llyr. Mr Hall’s Limousin bulls also topped at 183.5p & 181.5p both purchased by Mike Atkinson. M/s Dodd of West View sold two Limousin bulls for 178.5p & 175.5p both selling to Mike Atkinson. M/s Bousfield & Sons of Holme Farm sold a British Blue bull for 177.5p to Cleveland Meats.

A good show of cast cows were forward with M/s Armstrong of High Tarns Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow for 729kg 168.5p £1228.37 bought by Owain Llyr. Buckabank Farms sold the top priced British Blue cow per head for 984kilo 147.5p £1451.40 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Lambs
The Annual Christmas Primestock show was held along side the weekly sale of prime lambs on Monday with 9 classes and over 50 pens forward for master judge Mr Geoff Riley of Riley Brothers, Burnley. Mr Riley went on to award the Championship ticket to tremendous supporters M/s Dodd of West View with their 4 Beltex lambs which went on to sell for £160 to Mr Jim Mullholland on behalf of R & J Mullholland butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. The Reserve Champion prize went to another great supporter Mr IL McIllwraith of Mouldy Hills who’s 4 untrimmed Beltex lambs sold for £125 to Mr Riley the judge.
