The autumn special sheep sales season this year
began with a higher than anticipated trade, underpinned
by a strong demand from
commercial breeders across the country.
A shortage of grazing caused by the summer's drought failed to dampen
the enthusiasm of breeders looking for both pedigree and commercial

TUBERCULOSIS
- THE NEW THREAT
Since restocking Cumbria after foot and mouth
there have been over 90 herds, which have had tuberculosis.
This has resulted in over 295 cows being
slaughtered.
Not all of these cases
have occurred in restocked herds, but the majority are associated with cattle

CHARITY AUCTION
Already there have been pledges of cattle, sheep and crop
to be sold in a charity auction at Borderway Mart on November 29th
2003. Organised by the National Farmers Union's north Cumbria group,
in conjunction
with H&H, the Farmers' Charity Auction is to raise cash for the Royal Agricultural
Benevolent Institution, Cumbria Hospice at Home and Cumbria Air Ambulance.
