Harrison and Hetherington’s 3 Degrees

Press Release 1st December 2011

Working your way through college took on a new meaning last week when three young Harrison & Hetherington Auctioneers were awarded degrees at a ceremony in Carlisle Cathedral.

James Little from Thursby, Cumbria, Grant Anderson from Annan, Dumfriesshire and Lynne Grieve, a farmer’s daughter from Bellingham in Northumberland and the only lady on the course, graduated with a Foundation Degree of Science in Auctioneering and Valuations. All three have studied part-time for the last four years whilst holding down full-time jobs with Harrison and Hetherington. Awarded by the University of Central Lancashire they received their degrees from Dr John Sentanu, the Archbishop of York.

As a result of their success the three are now automatically enrolled and qualify as Fellows of The Livestock Auctioneer’s Association. This qualification forms an essential part of their working lives as auctioneers, as it’s a pre-requisite if valuations are to be made. This was a detailed course which, in addition to valuations, covered everything from taxation and the law to animal health and welfare.

James, Grant and Lynne all agree that studying for this degree was a significant challenge, and involved more than a little extra work. James, aged 24, was feeding cattle and sheep on the family farm before coming in to a full day’s work at Harrison & Hetherington. This was then followed by many evening’s study: “It was a hard slog, but definitely worth it.”

Harrison & Hetherington, based at Carlisle’s Borderway, is the UK’s largest and leading livestock sale centre, handling 800,000 head of cattle and sheep annually. They are the appointed auctioneers for all major beef, dairy and sheep breed societies throughout the UK and the farmstock business is well known and respected by pedigree and commercial farmers both nationally and internationally.

In their roles as auctioneers they will join a team of twelve other qualified auctioneers and become integral players within the organisation, working across all of the Auction Marts operated by Harrison and Hetherington.

Scott Donaldson, Sales Director of Harrison & Hetherington, has mentored this trio and is absolutely delighted with their achievements: “They have all worked incredibly hard and their qualifications benefit us enormously as a company, as well as giving each of them greater professional and personal skills.“

Scott endorses the importance of the further studies the young auctioneers have undertaken.
“It is imperative that they get the best available training in order for them to do their jobs effectively. James, Lynne and Grant all joined the company straight from school and are a perfect example of how it’s sometimes a good idea to find a company that likes you, and then grow your knowledge and qualifications in partnership with your day-to-day work.”
