The area around Lockerbie has an excellent reputation for the quality of its store cattle, suckled calves and sheep as Harrison & Hetherington Operations Director David Pritchard who attended the opening explains: “Lockerbie is renowned for selling breeding sheep, store lambs, store cattle and its weekly sale of prime sheep and cast cows. We have a busy autumn and winter season coming up starting with the main society sales for both the North Country Cheviots and the Hill Cheviots and as usual we are expecting a lot of interest with buyers coming to Lockerbie from across the UK.”
The next major sale at Lockerbie Auction Mart is The North Country Cheviot Sale to be held on Wednesday 21st September, recognised as the society’s main sale in the South of Scotland. On the day 5000 ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs including Hill Cheviot draft ewes and 400 Hill and Park Rams will pass through the auction ring. This sale is followed by the main ram sale held on behalf of the Hill Cheviot Sheep Society on 3rd October where 410 rams will be up for auction. The busy autumn season will also see the first main sale for quality suckled calves on 27th September.
The new café at the Lockerbie Mart is being operated by H&H catering staff, open on all the main sale days, it will no doubt be a welcome service as temperatures start to fall.
