Grant, Lynne and James were all accepted as Associate Members following their completion of a Foundation Degree course in Livestock Auctioneering and Valuation from the University of Cumbria. The course is run on behalf of the IAAS and LAA (Livestock Auctioneers Association); all students must complete the three year course while working with an IAAS corporate member such as Harrison & Hetherington.

The award was made at the IAAS annual conference held at Larkhall, Glasgow. Commenting on their success David Pritchard, Operations Director at Harrison & Hetherington and Vice President of the IAAS said:

“We are delighted that Grant, Lynne and James have been successful in their studies and that we could provide an environment for them to learn both the theory and the practice of livestock auctioneering. These auctioneers provide a vital link between farms and end users and it is important that we train young people in these skills to secure the future and development of the industry. “

On an annual basis, the company auctions some 800,000 animals from customers across the UK and Europe. Grant, Lynne and James will be based at the main Borderway Mart in Carlisle and will be involved in the work of its other marts in Broughton, Kirkby Stephen, Lazonby, Lockerbie, Middleton and Newcastleton. James in particular in his auctioneering role at the weekly prime sheep sales and breeding sheep sales will spend a considerable amount of time in Lazonby. Grant will also auctioneer at the weekly store cattle and store & breeding sheep sales. Both will be supported by Lynne, as fieldsperson she will be involved with all aspects of farm visits, private trading and canvassing and supporting store cattle and other rings at Carlisle.

As IAAS members they will also have an active role in shaping the future of the auctioneering industry in the region. The organisation has excellent relations with the Scottish Government Rural Directorate and several bodies involved with the selling and marketing of livestock. It plays an important role in establishing best practice at livestock auctions including issues such as animal welfare and biosecurity.
