Farm sales reflect faith in the future

The Knells Farm, Houghton and land at Fair Bank, Plumpton were sold by H&H Bowe by public auction at the Shepherds Inn, Carlisle on August 26 – both bought by people intending to farm, confirming faith in the future of the industry.

The Knells Farm
The Knells Farm

The Knells Farm, Houghton comprised of a stock rearing farm, extending in total to 176.53 acres including a five bedroom farmhouse and extensive range of modern and traditional buildings, land and single farm payments.

The turnout for the auction was incredible on a bright August afternoon and the room was particularly full with farming people from far and wide. David Thomlinson took to the microphone and the atmosphere was electric as he started the proceedings.

As usual in such circumstances the lots and then the whole were offered to the room, and provisionally knocked down at the highest bid. After consultation with the vendors, David proceeded to offer the farm as a whole again to the room of hushed bidders and observers.

Everyone focused their attention on the bidders and it was finally knocked down at £1,550,000, well in excess of the expectations of Mr and Mrs Batey, H&H Bowe and the gathered audience.

Similarly the land at Fair Bank, Plumton proved to be an indication that land is still sought after and prices can exceed the guide price, even in these uncertain times.
