Export demand should beef up sales

Once again, the month of May provides a highlight at Borderway with pedigree
beef shows and sales, writes auctioneer David Dickinson.

This year's sales should be even more interesting. With the lifting of the export ban we have seen some breeding stock already being exported into Europe in private deals. The UK stockmasters have always been held in high esteem worldwide, and now their stockmanship, bloodlines and genetics are available.

But our own home trade can be very strong from commercial breeders for bulls deemed to be the right one for the job, coupled with the schemes set up in Ireland and Wales to encourage their countrymen to buy even better bulls than usual.

Last May we saw Belgian Blues equalling the breed record of 21,000gns and Aberdeen Angus bulls setting a new centre record.

So what of this year?
Maybe some new records will be set but, most importantly, the commercial stockman finds the right sire in order for him to continue producing top class beef.
