The Borderway herd of pedigree Belted Galloways has enjoyed success at the summer shows this year. A yearling heifer, Borderway Hannah won the championship at Gilsland Show which also hosted the national Galloway show, after winning her class at the event in the hands of showman Stuart Renton.
Hannah also won her class at Dumfries Show the day before where Borderway Hugo, a yearling bull by stock bull Billy Bob, won the bull class at Gilsland and was placed second in his class at Dumfries.
The Borderway herd was established in 2002 following a visit to the late Flora Stewart's Mochrum herd in Wigtownshire. The nucleus of the herd was formed by selecting four maiden heifers aged nine to 12 months old. A further four heifers - two black Belties and two red - were also purchased from the Mochrum herd in 2003 and then later that year the stock bull, also of Mochrum breeding, was bought at the annual autumn sale in Castle Douglas. "Since establishing the herd, numbers have grown fairly rapidly with new calves born each year," said farmstock operations director David Pritchard. "During the spring of 2003 we also established the Borderway Galloway herd by purchasing two Dun Galloway Maiden heifers from John Maxwell, of Fintry, near Glasgow through our sale ring in Carlisle as well as a further four that year. "The Dun Galloway herd now comprises six breeding females and this year they have successfully produced five calves. With the help of Robert Graham, from Castle Douglas, we hired a Dun Galloway bull to serve the heifers." At the 2005 Dumfries Show - the herd's first outing - Borderway Hannah, her mother Mochrum Kristabel and Borderway Harry also carried off some of the tickets.
