Also new to the event is its secretary Carolyn Charlton from H&H farmstock who has taken over the role from Lesley Eastwell. Carolyn, whose family farms at Cawfields on the Roman Wall to the east of Gilsland, has been associated with the show as a competitor and as a member of the ladies committee for the last five years.

Gilsland Show has a reputation as a premier local sheep show on its Holme Field venue, attracting a number of breeds and crosses including North of England Mules, Blackfaces, Texels and prime lambs, as well as a very successful horse show the Sunday before the main event.

Now the Galloway Show is likely to attract entries of between 70 and 80 cattle from the surrounding area of north Cumbria where the breed is popular as well as further afield. There will also be classes for Belted Galloways. "The show has regained its success after being cancelled due to foot and mouth and it will be good to see cattle back at the event after a long absence," said Carolyn.

Harrison & Hetherington is one of the sponsors of the Galloway show - but more are needed - contact Carolyn Charlton on 01228 640924.

* The Scottish National Charolais Show 2006 will be staged at Cumberland Show on July 15. The fourth event of its kind to be organised by Scottish and Northern Charolais Breeders, the show plans to build on its previous successes attracting over £6,000 in industry sponsorship and more than 100 entries to the 15 classes which are open exhibitors from throughout Britain.

"We've decided to move across the border and choose the Cumberland as our event's 2006 venue to provide an opportunity not only for our members based in Scotland but also those in the north of England and beyond," said Scottish and Northern Charolais Breeders' chairman, Neil Caul.

For further information contact Neil Caul on 07971 147774 or Alison Gray on 07717 338804; or the Cumberland Show's Donella Rozario on 01697 747397.
