Alison takes in the Royal Winter Fair

Harrison & Hetherington dairy sales and marketing co-ordinator Alison Millar has been to Canada with Semex's Royal Winter Fair Tour to Toronto, after winning the Holstein UK President's Medal Award at the annual Semex conference in January 2004.

Alison received the award from an original entry list of more than 30 candidates from across the UK. The seven-day trip from November 7 took in visits to top herds including Quality Holsteins, Claynook, and Fradon as well as the Gencor bull stud in Guelph, Ontario.

Then it was on to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto -which Alison had previously been to twice while working in North America, however, not as a spectator.

She saw the Jersey cattle judging, the Sale of Stars and then the Holstein Show which was won by a Quebec cow - called Alison!. "I had a fantastic experience. It was good to catch up with what is going on in the industry in North America as well as catching up with a lot of old friends. "The herd visits were particularly interesting in being able to see what type of sires they were using and the young sires whose daughters were in milk."

Rounding off the trip was the Triple Crown Sale at Brubakers Sale Barn which was topped by a member of the Lustre family which produced the top price at the December Black & White Sale at Carlisle.

Alison, from Randalstown, Northern Ireland, who graduated from Harper Adams University College, Shropshire, with a degree in agricultural animal science, joined Harrison & Hetherington two years ago.
