CHAMPION SETS NEW CENTRE RECORD AT TWO DAY EVENT
FRIDAY 19th AND SATURDAY 20th MARCH 2004
A new centre record of £4,000 was achieved at the second day of
the noted two day spring show and sale for suckled calves and store cattle
at Borderway Mart.
 |
| Champion Steer |
A
red Limousin cross steer from local breeder Mr Peter Richardson of Sandhills,
Bassthenwaite Lake, Keswick, attracted much interest. This very much
admired home bred 12 month old bullock was sired by a Limousin cross
bull and out of Limousin cross cow, won the Supreme Champion ticket of
the steer judging. He was successfully knocked down to local showman
Mr Neil Slack of Plumtree, Newby.
This highly noted spring show and sale attracted many outstanding show type steers
and heifers over the two days and buyers were not disappointed with the quality
on offer. Trade was thought by many to be as dear as ever, especially for heifers.
The first day saw 903 heifers on offer and the pre-sale judging was carried out
by Mr Stephen Hibberd of Sheffield.

| Champion Heifer |
The Championship heifer award was presented
to Messrs Sowerby of Sycamore Rise, Great Asby for a 12 month old Limousin
cross sired by a French bull Pactole and out of a Belgian Blue cross
Friesian mother.
She later sold for £1,100 to Mr Paul Tippetts of Highbridge, Somerset.
The Reserve Champion heifer prize went to regular consignors of this event
Messrs Scott of Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead, Carlisle, also for a Limousin
cross sired
by Eden President. She sold for £1,000 to Mr T Scott of Gateside, Linlithgow.
The leading price of the heifer sale was £1,500 for a Limousin cross from
Mr Andrew Harrison of Grange Hall, Great Asby, and was sold to Mr Owain Llyr
and Mr Tudor Edwards of Ty’n-y-wern, Ruthin.
The second day saw 1,014 steers presented and the pre-sale judging was carried
out jointly by Mr Brian Hough of Pontefract and Mr Andrew Smith of Kirkby Lonsdale.
They presented the Championship ticket to the Limousin cross from Mr Peter Richardson.

The Reserve Champion rosette went to the second prize steer from the
same class consigned by Mr Jim Hollingsworth of Pandy Farm, Mold, Clwyd.
His 9
month old

Blue mother who herself was purchased at Carlisle. He later sold for £2,600
to Mr B Smith of Red House Farm, Leamington Spa.
