CONTINENTAL STORE CATTLE SHOW & SALE On Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd March at Borderway Mart, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held the great annual two day spring show and sale of continental cross store bullocks and heifers, which once again enhanced its national reputation in the cattle world.
The judge on the heifer day being Mr P Newcombe, Bedale had the very difficult task. The first class of Limousin heifers totalled 32 wonderful animals, the Belgian Blue class was particularly strong with 16 exceptional heifers being paraded. Overall Champion was awarded to show master Mr J Hollingworth of Pandy Farm, Mold for his Blonde cross Belgian Blue heifer. This stylish 10 month old heifer is full sister to the reserve heifer champion from Birmington Primstock show 2002. Sired by Pioneer Rascal who is a son of Whistley Dollar, and out of a pure Belgian Blue cow, she was knocked down to Mr L Harrington of Moss Cottage, Drumburgh, Carlisle for £900.
Standing in reserve position was loyal supporters Messrs Atkinson of Scratchmere Scar, Plumpton, Penrith with a classy Charolais cross heifer which sold for £840 to Messrs AD & A Richardson, Low Bank End Farm, Appleby, Cumbria. This entry was born in February 2002 and is by a pure Charolais bull out of a Simmental cross Charolais heifer. The top price in the heifer section went to Messrs Scott of Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead, Carlisle for a stylish Limousin cross. Their 11 month old home bred entry was sired by their stock bull Carnkirk Hilton, a bull that has produced a lot of showwinning stock for the Scott family. She realised an astounding £2400 to Cumbrian show expert Mr N Slack of Plumtree, Newby, Penrith. Trade throughout the day can only be described as awesome as the electric atmosphere resulted in a truly memorable day.
On the second day of trading, the judge for the steers was Mr S Dale of York who again had a very difficult task as numbers forward for judging again nearer the fifty mark. The champion animal was this time found in the first class of Limousin steers with Messrs R & M Scott of Thirlwall Castle achieving the unique double of champion and reserve for two exceptionally home bred shapey animals. Both entries were born on the same day last May, however the Champion was sired by their noted Carnkirk Hilton and the Reserve Champion was by their other bull, Garmon Now. Securing the Champion animal at £850 was Mr D Ball of Saxon House, Suffolk. Taking the reserve champion steer was Mr DS Thomas of Dorlcoed, Lampeter for £920.
Top price of the day however was secured by Mr A Harrison of Grange Hall, Great Asby who over the two days had exhibited a wonderful selection of stock. His prize winning steer was immaculatly presented catching the eye of Mr A Phillips from Chadwell Lodge, Stoke Hammond who signed the cheque for £1420. As with the heifers the ringside was packed from the start, bidding was frantic consequently prices exceeded all vendors expectations. It was commented by several regular purchasers that never before had such large numbers of terrific quality passed through the ring.
