CARLISLE ANNUAL 2 DAY CONTINENTAL CROSS STORE CATTLE SALE

FRIDAY 27th & SATURDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2002

On Friday 27th & Saturday 28th September 2002, Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their noted Annual Two day show and sale of suckled calves when they presented 1559 head over the days, comprising 900 bullocks and 659 heifers.
Thirlwall Castle Champion
Michael Scott, of Thirlwall Castle, with the Friday steer suckled calf champion, an 11 month old sired by Limousin bull Garmon Now which went on to make the sale's top price of £900. Also pictured is the judge Gavin Scott, of Linlithgow, Edinburgh.

On the first day a good entry of quality bullock calves met spirited bidding from buyers from all parts of the country with a firm trade resulting throughout.

The presale judging was carried out by Mr Gavin Scott of Linlithgow who awarded the championship rosette to a Limousin cross from noted regular exhibitors Messrs R & M Scott of Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead, Carlisle and later sold for the top price of the day at £900.

The reserve ticket was awarded to a Belgain Blue cross from Mr P Richardson of Sandhills, Bassenthwaite, Keswick and later sold for £700.

A very good quality offering of Charolais cross bullocks were on offer this day and in the judging of the pens the first prize ticket went to Messrs Bindloss of Grayrigg Hall, Kendal. The best pen of Limousin bullocks was presented to Messrs Scott of Thirlwall Castle.

The second day sale attracted an enormous ringside of buyers and they were not disappointed with the quality of heifers on offer. Trade, was again, very strong and all prices were in advance of vendors expectations.

The judging was carried out by Mr Jeremy Waind of Malton and his choice of Champion was the winner from the Limousin class shown by Messrs R & M Scott of Thirlwall Castle and their heifer sold for £1,500.

However, the reserve champion, also a Limousin heifer, came from Mr FA Waugh of Kilnstown, Roweltown, Carlisle who sold her for the leading price tag of the day at £1,600.

In the classes of pens the first prize rosette for the Charolais class went to Messrs T Bell & Son of Mosshill Farm, Brampton and in the Limousin section the best pen was awarded to Messrs Scott of Thirlwall Castle, whilst the best pen of Belgain Blues went to Messrs JC & SE Little of The Guards.
Kilnstown Reserve Champ
Saturday's reserve heifer suckled calf champion from Andrew Waugh, of Kilnstown, Bewcastle, which made the top price of £1,600. Called Dolly Mixture, the six month old heifer is by a Limousin bull out of a Galloway-Friesian cow.

Averages - bullocks £541.93, heifers £471.20.
