On Friday 22nd March Harrison & Hetherington Limited after a years break re-commenced their noted annual continental spring store cattle sale when they presented a catalogue entry of nearly 2000 head of cattle. The event was very kindly sponsored by Lakeland Beef.
David Pritchard, Operations Director, said that they had hoped for an entry of somewhere in the region of 1,000 head but the company was totally overwhelmed by the large support of many farmers and the numbers forward. Judging was very ably and efficiently carried out by Mr Gordon Amos of West View, Market Harborough who awarded the overall championship rosette to a Belgian Blue cross heifer consigned by Messrs JC & SE Little of Guards Farm, Ireby, Carlisle which later sold for £900 to Mr D Ball of Broadside Park Farm, Southward. The reserve championship ticket went to a Belted Galloway cross Limousin heifer from Mr W Orme of Home Farm, Askrigg and sold for £1,150 to Messrs Hough & Sons, of Days Farm, Nr Pontefract. Topping the sale at £1,350 was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Little of Guards Farm and was successfully knocked down to Mr CJ Brooke of Tappedine Farm, Worcester.
There was a massive support of both local and distant buyers including many long standing supporters as well as new customers and they were not disappointed at the quality of cattle on offer. The interest throughout the sale was tremendous and prices were up to and in advance of vendors expectations. The highly satisfactory sale came to a close at 7.30pm resulting in a days trading of steers averaging £571.73 and heifers averaging £460.83. At the end of a very successful day David Thomlinson, Sales and Marketing Director, commented that it was marvellous to see the market alive again. Prize list Leading prices (all crosses)
