RARE, MINORITY & TRADITIONAL BREED SHOW & SALE
SATURDAY 16th SEPTEMBER 2006
This annual extravaganza once again attracted an enormous and varied
entry of sheep, cattle and pigs of over thirty breeds plus a huge variety
of poultry and waterfowl.
Champion White Ryeland a ram lamb shown by
Margaret Hipps of Harrogate which sold for £150
 |
In all sections quality attracted a worthy
premium for the vendors. The top price for a sheep was £660, being
bid on a striking Kerry Hill shearling ram – with two others at £600 & £500.
The Ryelands were again in consistently strong demand, seven making
over £200 to £270. Wensleydales peaked at £320 and
the much sought after Whitefaced Woodlands peaked at £260 with
eleven over £100. Three Shetland sheep made over £100 to
a top of £160.
There was a great sense of realism amongst the sellers, who have had
to come to terms with the effects of the recent changes in subsidies
and farm payments. This is particularly evident in the smaller primitive
breeds. Even so with these, the top quality “breeders” animals
attracted good prices.
In the Jacob sale the top bid of £260 headed a list of ten three
figure prices.
Top price from the Poultry and Waterfowl
section
a pair of female Hawaian geese
which sold for £210.
 |
True to current form the entry of some forty
pigs attracted great interest from a pedigree Saddleback gilt with a
pure bred litter of six at £340,
to young Tamworth weaners at £50 and served Gloucester Old Spot
gilts and Tamworths at £210. Berkshire gilts were up to £160
and Large Blacks £100.
The overall standard of cattle was mixed and trade was naturally quality
related, topping at £620 for a 2 year old Longhorn heifer.
The poultry and waterfowl trade was flying with six cages making over £100
with pairs of Hawaian female geese at £210 and a pair of Red breasted
geese at £200.
