RARE & MINORITY BREEDS

Carlisle
RARE, MINORITY & TRADITIONAL BREED SHOW & SALE
FRIDAY 16th & SATURDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 2005

779 Sheep, 40 Cattle, 27 Pigs and 403 cages of Poultry & Waterfowl
RBST supported

The current enthusiasm for all things natural at least ensured that the annual rare, minority and traditional breeds show and sale at Borderway Mart on Saturday 17th September was well supported by exhibitors and by the general public.

The two and a half year old Beef Shorthorn cow Thorn Marguerite and her three month old bull calf which sold for £1,150 topping the cattle trade for JP Kirkbride, of Thornley, Springfield, Gretna.

With more sheep and cattle than usual, and for the first time since FMD, pigs on sale, plus the usual hall full of poultry and waterfowl, the sale was mostly very successful indeed.

A few of the breeds felt the dull feeling of disinterest, prevailing in commercial agriculture, with the cattle and the smaller primitive types of sheep being harder to sell.

As usual the poultry and waterfowl department saw a brisk trade throughout.

The 2004-born Saddleback gilt which sold for £400 with her litter of nine piglets for John Sutcliffe, of Lowick House, Lowick, Ulverston, Cumbria, topping the pig section.

The pigs, a dead certainty to attract the casual onlookers and families, also attracted the serious buyers, with £400 being bid to secure a Saddleback gilt and her litter.

Mrs Gwen Pugh, with her Montgomery flock at Hill View, Four Crosses, Llanymynech, Powys, sold the top priced Kerry Hill at £420 with a group one shearling ram. She also showed the champion (lot 633) a shearling ewe which sold for £340.

On a bright note many of the stronger breeds of sheep such as, the Kerry Hills, Ryelands, Hampshires, Shropshires, plus the Whitefaced Woodlands, all met a brisk and very encouraging market with a dozen or so reaching £300 up to £450 (Whitefaced Woodlands from John and Tessa Wigham) and £420 (Kerry Hill shearling ram from Mrs Gwen Pugh).

Ecolan, a stock ram for John and Tessa Wigham's Whitefaced Woodland flock at Riggshield Farm, Irthington, Carlisle, which sold for £450, the breed top price. The successfully shown three shear ram was among a consignment of ewes and rams forward as a major reduction of the White House flock.
