RARE BREEDS
RARE BREEDS SALE
Saturday 2nd October 2004

The Twelfth Annual Carlisle Show & Sale of Rare, Minority & Traditional Breeds of livestock held on Saturday October 2nd 2004 in Borderway Mart was a huge success.

Shetland Sheep
Shetland champion a shearling ram, Rench Sandy from Tom Findlay, of The Rench, Dechmont, Broxburn, West Lothian.
Numbers of stock exceeded even last year with roughly 650 pedigree sheep of 15 breeds represented, along with 60 cattle, a handful of goats and ponies, and 1600 head of poultry and waterfowl. All this, plus the annual craft fare endured an enormous crowd of commercial farmers, small holders and enthusiasts turned out for the event. The recent importance of traditional breeds, ideally suited to low input easy management systems in a changing farming environment, resulted in an excellent trade for virtually all the breeds.

In the annual Jacob Sheep Sale, which as always was enthusiastically supported by vendors and purchasers, there was a virtual total sell-out with only a small handful unsold. Twenty one sheep made over £100 with several over £200 up to £280 for a ram lamb from Mrs. D. Price, and a ewe lamb from George Strachan at £260. Once again the Zwartble sheep were in keen demand with more than half the entry making over £400 to a top of £550 for a smart homebred ewe-lamb from the Mattinson family of Troutbeck Farm, Carlisle.

The Ryeland sheep which have established an excellent reputation in the north, had a record entry of 84 catalogued with some top quality consignments. Fourteen sheep made over £200 of which five were over £300. Top price female was a £450 shearling from Mrs. P. Maddock's Wellside flock, and the leading ram bid of £350 was for a shearling from Richard Wears noted Ruslin flock, which also turned out three females at £300 or more.

The Kerry Hills, topping at £500 for an impressive shearling ram from Mrs. Gwen Pugh, sold well throughout with eleven animals at £150 or more. Amongst the primitive breeds the Hebrideans and Shetlands were very well supported with no less than seventy Hebrideans entered and 180 Shetland sheep. Both breeds saw a total clearance of female sheep with Shetland ewe lambs making up to £160.

In the cattle department, trade was respectable with virtually all the pedigree animals finding buyers, top price being £630 for a Beef Shorthorn cow with a cross bred heifer calf at foot.

The huge number of birds in the sale necessitated separate auctions for waterfowl and poultry, but this did little to detract from the trade, with the large crown of buyers ensuring a most respectable result.
