New Breed Record Set for Zwartbles

Breeders and enthusiasts gathered in their numbers for the countrys leading show and sale of registered Zwartbles sheep on Friday 26th August 2005 at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

With an entry of over 300 head, trade throughout stayed the pace until the end of the sale. Topping the event was the first shearling ram into the ring from Victoria and Benjamin Stayt from Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Their group 2 home bred ram, a category ‘A’ shearling set a new breed record price of 2,800gns. This single February born ram was sold to Messrs SJ & DH Wood & Sons of Strathkinness, St. Andrews.

Supreme Champion

Close behind at 2,500gns was the days supreme champion from Messrs GA & HM Francis of Abergorlech, Carmarthen. Their home bred category ‘A’ January born ram lamb was purchased by Trehudreth Farm of Bodmin, Cornwall.

Leading the female classes at 1,200gns jointly were local breeders Mr & Mrs FJ Mattinson of Troutbeck Farm, Heads Nook, Brampton and Mr Charles Scott of East Middle, Hawick.

Reserve Supreme Champion

First to sell was an imported ewe from the Troutbeck flock which had earlier in the day won the Female Championship and Reserve Supreme Champion tickets. She also sold to Messrs SJ & DH Wood & Sons of Strathkinness, St. Andrews.

The second female entry to sell for 1,200gns was a ewe lamb from the East Middle flock. This home bred category ‘A’ lamb lifted the reserve female champion ticket and went on to sell to Mr B Duffton of Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Averages - 37 ewes £368.07, 45 shearling gimmers £393.40, 128 ewe lambs £250.02, 4 aged rams £359.63, 11 shearling rams £523.09, 43 lamb rams £417.32.
