On behalf of the Solway & Tyne Texel Breeders Club
Annual show and sale of
PEDIGREE TEXEL SHEEP

Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th September 2004
comprising
10 aged rams, 406 shearling rams and 604 lamb rams
275 gimmer shearlings, 19 ewes

texel female sale ring Pedigree Texel rams and females met a solid commercial trade for the annual Solway and Tyne Texel Breeders’ Club annual show and sale, selling to a top price of 13,000gns.

While prices failed to rise to last year’s exceptional sale and near record-breaking 120,000gns for the shearling ram Loosebeare Imp, the 13,000gns paid for Castlecairn Keltic Star topped the pre-2003 centre record for a ram lamb which stood at 11,500gns.

The April-born Keltic Star was one of only two lots, both scrapie genotype group one, consigned by Bruce Renwick from his Castlecairn flock at Legars, Kelso, Roxburghshire.

The lamb is by the 22,000gns Watchknowe Jimmy’s Pride whose dam is full sister to the Worcester 2002 champion which sold for 10,000gns.

It sold to noted pedigree Texel breeder John Forsyth, of Maybole for his Glenside flock.

Mr Renwick also showed the overall champion at Friday’s show selected by judge Victor Chestnutt, of Bushmills, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland, also by Jimmy’s Pride, which went on to make the joint third top price at 6,000gns to Northumberland breeders Jonathan Watson, of Bowsden, Berwick on Tweed and Mrs D Walton, of Wandylaw, Chathill, Alnwick.

The February born Castlecairn Karma Man’s dam Muiresk Forever, is full sister to Castlecairn Irn Bru which sold for 52,000gns.

Mr Renwick broke the Carlisle female record last November at a collective sale of in-lamb females when his 2003 Royal Highland Show champion, a shearling ewe in lamb to Jimmy’s Pride, sold for 11,000gns

Selling at the second top price of 12,000gns and late on in the catalogue was the March born ram lamb, Baltier Korker, a son of the record priced Texel which sold at Lanark last August – Tophill Joe from R Forsyth’s Baltier flock at Whithorn, Wigtownshire.

Purchasers were Matt and Craig Ridley for their Haltcliffe flock at Hesket Newmarket, Wigton, Cumbria, who paid last year’s Carlisle ram lamb record price of 48,000gns for Douganhill Jeronimo from Brian MacTaggart and son David, of Orchardtown Mains, Palnackie, Castle Douglas.

Harrison & Hetherington auctioneer David Dickinson said: “The sheep met a good commercial trade right through the sale with purchasers looking for quality breeding rams.

“ While it is impossible to compare prices and averages to last year’s exceptional sale, averages were up on the 2002 sale.”

The second ram to make 6,000gns was a scrapie genotype one lamb from William Knox’s Haddo flock at Mid Haddo, Fyvie, Turriff, Aberdeenshire, and another son of Tophill Joe. Purchasers were Ronnie and Malcolm Sym, of East Town Farm, Milbourne, Ponteland, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Topping the Friday’s female trade at 4,000gns was Holly Farm Hilversum, a scrapie genotype one shearling from the Holly Farm flock of Davies and Wareing, of Halsall, Ormskirk, Lancashire, selling to J & W Mellin, Hull House, Hellifield, Skipton, North Yorkshire.

Purchaser of the next three highest priced female lots all from the Loosebeare flock of last year’s centre record priced shearling Andrew and Mark Quick, of Crediton, Devon was Ron and Frances110, 3,100gns R Wilson, of Carr Holme, Armathwaite, Carlisle, Cumbria.

The shearling ewes which sold to the Wilsons for 3,100gns and two at 2,000gns were all by Woodend Gladiator – by Craighead Dynamite, grandsire of the 12,000gns ram. Gladiator sired rams to 2,700gns and females to 3,000gns in 2003.
