TEXEL SHEEP On Friday 6th December 2002, Harrison & Hetherington in conjunction with the British Texel Sheep Society and Solway and Tyne Texel Breeders Club conducted the In-lamb premier show and sale.
The pre sale show was most ably judged by local flockmaster Harry Wilkinson of Arkleby who awarded the supreme championship to an exceptional homebred ewe consigned by Mr John Tough of Easterseat, Carluke. Sired by Gregors Elba and out of a Brague Apache bred ewe, she realised 3000gns to fellow breeder, and consigner of the reserve champion Messrs JB Renwick & Sons of the Castlecairn flock, Legars Farm, Kelso in conjunction with Messrs Shennan of Carsegowan, New Abbey, Dumfries. The reserve championship was awarded to a very stylish Castlecairn gimmer sired by Turin Fantastic which realised 1700gns to Mr PA Cartman, Scosthrop Farm, Airton, Skipton. Also selling at 3,000gns was a gimmer from the Glenside flock of Mr J Forsyth of Maybole. By Muiresk Glenfiddich and out of a Muiresk Blondin bred ewe she also sold to Mr PA Cartman of Skipton. The sale started at a cracking pace as the first shearling into the ring, consigned by Mrs Jean Gould quickly raced to 1500gns this momentum was maintained as Mr Tom MacTaggart also broke the 1000gns barrier leveling at 1050gns.
In the ewe section John Tough`s pen attracted a good deal of attention averaging over 1000gns. The sale also contained the reduction of the Blowplain and Glenkins flock from Mary & Bill Blyth, friends and fellow breeders competed strongly to ensure a very satisfactory trade prevailed with a highest price of 500gns. Averages - 31 shearling gimmers £716.03, 10 ewes £772.80; Blowplains and Glenkins Flocks 23 ewes £252.00, 21 shearling gimmers £268.25.
