SUFFOLK IN-LAMB SALE
WEDNESDAY 6th NOVEMBER 2002

A huge crowd of buyers and spectators gathered to one of the first pedigree Suffolk in lamb sales held in the season at Borderway Mart and were not disappointed with the presentation and quality of stock on offer.

The sale had attracted the dispersal of the Hambleton and Blelack flocks, a production from the Santon flock together with collective show and sale.

Topping the sale at 4,000gns was a 2 crop ewe from the Blelack flock of Messrs G & A Massie, Blelack, Dinnet, Perthshire. She is by Glenisla Nightlife and her dam goes back to Bridgestone Barnaby. She was successfully bought as an 18th birthday present for Miss Judith Barbour’s Ewebank flock at Annan.

Also from the Blelack flock at 2,200gns was another 2 crop ewe, this time sired by Crosemanor Commandeur and her dam going back to a Cairness bred ram. Signing the cheque was Mr Ian Barbour of Beech Grove, Annan.

A 3 crop ewe from Blelack sold for 2,000gns to Messrs AR Lawson & Son of South Farm, Newcastle upon Tyne. Her breeding included Crosemanor Commandeur and her dam was by Bridgestone Bismark.

Taking the leading price ticket in the Hambleton flock for Mrs Jane Greensit-Marley of Thirsk, was one of the stock rams, Cairness Golden Jubilee, at 3,300gns. Golden Jubilee, a lamb with great carcase, power and character, is sired by Glenho Genereux and goes back to Bridgestone Highland on his dams pedigree and Muiresk King of Diamonds on his grand dams pedigree. He travels local to Ulverston for Messrs HA Sawrey & Son of Woodside Farm.

The leading female price for the Hambleton flock was a shearling gimmer at 950gns. By Bridgestone Brimstone and carrying Cairness and Muiresk in her dam line, she was sold to Messrs A Douglas & Sons of Woodhead, Cairness.

The Santon flock from County Turf Ltd of Low Santon Farm, Scunthorpe attracted a top price of 650gns for a shearling gimmer sired by Cairness Barnstormer and out of Stockton Olympic Gold ram. Her matermal sister is retained in the Santon flock for the Sainsbury Cup group 2002. She was knocked down to Mr JM Hayward of East Learmouth, Cornhill on Tweed.

In the collective section the overall champion attracted the top bid of 1,400gns for a ewe lamb from Mr MA Evans of Tan-Yr-Accar, Denbigh. Sired by a massive ram, Meikleson Sheer Power, and out of a Stockton Storm daughter, she was sold to Messrs I & A Park of East Learmouth, Cornhill on Tweed.

Averages - Hambleton flock 18 ewes £422.33, 7 shearling gimmers £487.50, 6 ewe lambs £493.50, 2 stock rams £2,058.00; Santon flock 25 ewes £307.86, 14 shearling gimmers £261.75; Blelack flock 39 ewes £610.35, 20 shearling gimmers £401.10; Collective show and sale 22 ewes £248.18, 79 shearling gimmers £312.47, 12 ewe lambs £243.25.
