2004 sale report

Lleyn female sale sees quality stock selling well.

Monday the 16th May 2005 saw the second sale of Lleyn females on behalf of the Lleyn Sheep Society. Trade was a direct reflection on the shortage of keep, the new single farm payment and the quality of sheep presented. Commercial buyers were pleased with the quality of stock that their money could buy.

Lleyn SheepEwe hoggs saw a top of £96 a head for a pen of 10 well grown, showy sheep from John & Rachel Geldard, Low Foulshaw, Kendal; these were purchased by Mr Field, Ellis Close Farm, Harwood Dale, Scarborough as a foundation for a small pedigree flock.

A pen of 20 ewe hoggs from John Smith, North Boig Farm, New Cumnock made £90 a head; these were purchased by Rob Wilson, Scales Farm, Berrier, Penrith. New buyers Gwysaney Estate, Gwysaney, Mold took home 60 ewe hoggs they paid a top of £87 a head for a pen of 10 smart breedy ewe hoggs from Frank Dinsdale, Low Hall, Kirby Stephen.

The limited numbers of ewes and lambs forward saw a top of £75 a life for six two year old ewes with twin lambs at foot from David Alexander, Millside Farm, Galston, Ayrshire to new breeder James Kingan, Laneside Farm, Troqueer, Dumfries.

Dennis & Anne Ison, Denoak Livestock, Lockerbie took £74 a life for a five year old ewe with ewe lamb at foot, the ewe had taken 2nd prize at the Highland show as a yearling they were purchased by T Todd, Wyndham House Farm, Brocklebank, Wigton. Dennis & Anne Ison, Denoak Livestock, Lockerbie also took £70 a life for a four year old ewe with ram lamb at foot, they make the journey south to Wiltshire to K M Perry, Greenacres Farm, Allington.

Topping the ewe hoggs with lambs at foot section twice was John Morton, Bank Hall, Penrith with 6 yearlings with single lambs at foot at £62 a life being paid by Nancy Allison, Anston Farm, Dunsyre, Lanark, the second pen of six were purchased by Rosalind Hunter, Kirkhouse, Brampton, Cumbria.

94 Ewes with lambs averaged £42.81 a life, 115 hoggs with lambs averaged £47.41 a life and 245 empty hoggs averaged £77.
