Thursday 23rd September 2004 Females take the thunder at Carlisle Lleyn Sale A high quality show of Lleyn females in big numbers and a strong show of breeders rams met with keen demand at the breeds biggest sale at Carlisle on Thursday 23rd September 2004. The 5000 breeding-females met with strong commercial demand with many buyers putting together nucleus flocks from which to breed their own replacements and a good proportion of females heading for crossing sires, with purchasers willing to pay a premium for a low cost, easy care commercial ewe. Top quality breeders females took the cream with five pens of gimmers topping the £200 a head mark, with scrapie genotype notably influencing value. Top price in the gimmers was a pen of 10 at £350 a head from John Morton, Bank Hall, Penrith, these were purchased by JA & DG Smith, Far Close, Knock, Appleby. A strong contingent of Northern Irish buyers saw Fiona Cunningham, Killyleagh, Downpatrick buy a pen of 10 ARR/ARR gimmers from James Goldie, Townfoot, Dumfries for £320. Paying £305 for a pen of 10 R1 gimmers was new breeder WB Prentice & Sons, Brockholes, Duns to Derek Steen, Westerhouses Farm, Bonchester Bridge, who had a classy run of gimmers that averaged £185 for 112. Topping the ewe lamb trade at £172 a head with a pen of five flashy ewe lambs was Neil and Debbie McGowan, Incheoch, Perthshire these were purchased by Dennis Aymes, Lakeview Farm, Ryton on Dunsmore. Dai & Cynthia Morris, Yr Ostrey, Carmarthen took £170 for a pen of five ewe lambs from I Evans & Son, Hendresifion, Machynlleth. Farmstock Genetics, Over Whitlaw, Selkirk sold a pen of five ewe lambs to David Alexander, Millside, Galston for £152. The atmosphere was electric as ram trade topped twice at 5000gns “ There was plenty of breeders quality rams on offer today with no fewer than 44 rams breaking the 1000gns mark” said auctioneer David Dickenson. The first sale topper C537 / 333, was Norman’s favourite from a pen of 4 which averaged 1925gns, came from Norman and Helen Lawrence, Blackpots, Ellon and was knocked down to Scotsheep host Willie Davidson, Poldean, Moffat. The second ram to realise 5000gns was a homebred shearling from D N Bennett & Son, Tyn-y- Coed, Meifod, Powys, this R1 ram was purchased by a syndicate of Henry Nelless, Thistleyhaugh, Longhorseley and Robert Lee, Lumbylaw, Alnwick. John Morton, Bank Hall, Penrith sold a pen of 6 rams to average 1806gns, the pen topper made 4500gns and was purchased by Michael Cusiter, Laga Farms, Orkney. Having a cracking sale was Edenhall Estates, Penrith with a pen of three very even rams averaging 2440gns, the pen topper made 4000gns and was purchased by Farmstock Genetics, Over Whitlaw, Selkirk. Averages: In brackets 2003 prices. 3 aged rams 504gns 157 Shearling rams 873gns (878gns), 4 Ram lambs 480gns (421gns). 277 ewes £88.35 (£95.61), 2158 shearlings £116.84 (£107.13), 1934 ewe lambs £71.88 (£69.70). |
