Breed Records Tumble at Carlisle 2002 Lleyn Sale.

Lleyn Sheep SaleThe atmosphere was electric at Carlisle on Thursday 26th September 2002 where a much-improved show of Lleyn Sheep for the breeds premier annual show and sale, produced a better trade than first anticipated.
“ There was a far better show of sheep forward today with no fewer than 22 rams breaking the 1000gns mark and the average ram price up £344” said Auctioneer David Dickinson.

The Male Champion was presented by David Alexander, Millside Farm, Galston, Ayrshire. This stylish group two genotyped shearling ram was first in the ring, setting a new breed society record at 4600gns it was knocked down to Willie Davidson, Poldean, Moffat.

This record was slashed later in the day by a powerful, showy ARR/ARR ram from Henry Nelless, Thistley Haugh, Longhorsley. This realised 6000gns and was purchased by James Goldie, Towfoot, Mouswald as the foundation of a new stud flock.

It proved a cracking day for renowned Aberdeenshire breeder Norman Lawrence who runs the Blackpots flock, at Auchnagatt, Ellon with three rams over 2000 gns. The first a group two at 2100gns to Neil McGowan, Incheoch, Alyth, next a group one at 2,200 gns to David Farmery, Artnoch, Barrhill, Girvan and the third a group one to David Lewis, Penygraig, Llanrhystud at 2,100gns.

Ram Lambs topped at 800gns for a group one ram from Richard Twose, Maenhir, Login to Lionel Organ, Ty Maen, Llandysul.

The Female trade was fuelled by demand from the commercial sector with shearling ewes being in strong demand up £30 on 2000. The ewe lambs forward were of mixed quality and this was reflected in the overall trade.
Bishop Burton College, Beverley, East Yorkshire took the female championship with a pen of five Shearling ewes, these were purchased for £155 a head by Malcolm Handley, Croasdale Farm, Slaidburn.

The female trade peaked at £165 for a pen of five flashy shearling ewes from A, E Davies, Bronnalt, Pwllheli these were secured by Dennis Ison, Denoak Livestock, Lockerbie. Neil and Debbie McGowan, Incheoch, Alyth presented two pens of 10 shearling ewes making £162 and £155 respectively this were purchased by Bolfracks Estate, Aberfeldy.

A large show of ewe lambs sold to a top of £130 for David Alexander’s prize winning pen of five to Willie Davidson. Three pens made £100 the first a pen of 6 from Sandy Tulloch, Miltonbank, Lumphannan going to Willie Davidson, the second a pen of five purchased by James Goldie from Henry Nelles and a pen of four from Emrys Jones, Lluest Wem, Powys to Lionel Organ.
