Bluefaced Leicester In lamb pedigree females Monday 24th January 2005 Bluefaced Leicester in lamb females attracted strong demand at Borderway on Monday 24th January 2005, selling to a top price of 3,500gns. Buyers travelled from as far as Aberdeen and down to Norfolk to attend the breeds largest event of in lamb females seen for some time. Securing the leading price tag was a ewe lamb from noted local breeders Messrs Lord of the Hewgill flock based at North Stainmore, Kirkby Stephen. Their homebred ARR/ARR lamb, sired by their own bred ram (M008) was knocked down to Mrs S Sutcliffe of Cragg Hill Farm, Settle.
The reserve champion winner of the pre-sale judging, a shearling gimmer, from David Cruickshank of the Nithsdale flock at Castle Douglas sold for the next leading price of 1,600gns. A group 2 gimmer by Barlaes Bouncer and selling in lamb to Nithsdale General, was sold to C Lamont of Black Park near Dumfries. Messrs Lords’ second entry from their consignment sold for 1,400gns. A group 2 ewe lamb sired by their homebred M008 ram, was successfully bought by W Sutcliffe & Sons of Holme Farm, Settle. Ayrshire breeders J & M Kerr of the Craigskean flock based at Maybole, Ayrshire offered a ARR/ARR home-bred gimmer lamb which sold for 1,300gns to JA Holden of Larne, Northern Ireland.
Also selling up to 1,000gns were two entries. The first to reach the 1,000gn mark was the events supreme champion, a ewe from Sophie Ann Harding of the Shrewbridge flock at Baddington, Nantwich. The group 1 ewe, a daughter of Lydbury Marcus Elite Plus, sold in lamb to a Barlaes bred ram was knocked down to F Brown of Kylieford, Insch, Aberdeenshire. The second 1,000gn bid also came from the Shrewbridge flock for a group 1 ewe and sired by the Lydbury bred ram. She sold in lamb to Cocklaw Class Act and was secured by T Wray of Co. Antrim, N.Ireland. Also on offer was the dispersal sale of the Eskley flock on behalf of Sam Williams which sold to a top of 450gns twice for an aged ewe and a shearling gimmer, and was followed by the dispersal sale of the Bowder flock from J Barrett which realised a leading price of 550gns twice over as well, both for 2 shear ewes. The mature portion from the Gwestydd flock was also consigned on behalf of TG & JM Jarman of Newton, Powys. Securing the top price of the consignment was 520gn for a shearling gimmer.
