Gapshield - £10,000

The 37th annual show and sale of 594 registered Bluefaced Leicesters took place within Borderway Mart on Friday 11th October 2002. A tremendous entry of stock was appreciated by a large crowd of purchasers from all over the UK. Stock sheep were keenly sought after and prices throughout were above vendors expectations.

Topping the sale at £10,000 was a shearling ram from Messrs WM & C Wallace of Gapshield, Brampton. This ram, an ARR/ARR was knocked down to joint purchasers Mr WA Dinsdale of Harkerside Place Farm, Richmond, and Messrs Lord of Low Dowgill, Kirkby Stephen.

The pre-sale judging in the ram section was carried out by Mr M Richardson of Greenlands, Cockermouth who awarded the Championsip rosette to a ram lamb from Messrs JB & SM Mounsey of Ashfield, Laversdale, Carlisle which later sold for £1,600 to Mr A Peart, Woodcroft Farm, Fosterley, Bishop Auckland. The reserve ticket went to Messrs Raine of Old Park, Kirkoswald for their ram lamb which sold for £600 to W Wearmouth of Rosehill Farm, Eastgate, Bishop Auckland.

In the female section, the pre sale judging was most ably carried out by Caroline McGillvary, who awarded the championship to an exceptional ewe lamb exhibited by Robert McTurk, of Glenhowl, Castle Douglas which sold for £1150 to the judge. Trade throughout in the female section was very selective with only the strongest sheep finding new homes.

On Friday 25th October 2002 Harrrison & Hetherington held their Annual second sale of Blue Faced Leicester Rams and females

With 121 Rams and 48 Females forward, trade was exceptional with many distant buyers in attendance. The show of sheep were not up to the usual standard, but were well bid for leaving vendors well satisfied.
