21st GOLD TOP SHOW AND SALE ON BEHALF OF LAKES COUNTIES JERSEY CATTLE CLUB
Wednesday 27th August 2003
Just champion: Gold Top judge Jean Rawstron, centre , with her champion from the Wheelbirks herd which she later bought and Judith Huntington of sponsors Barclays.
The “Gold Top” sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle saw one of the largest entries ever of Pedigree Jersey cattle at this annual collective event. This was very encouraging particularly in the light of FMD aftermath. Also encouraging was the big crowd of pedigree and commercial buyers which ensured a very respectable trade and a virtual 100% sell out.

Seven animals made over 1,000 gns to a top of 2,000 gns for a young bull bred and consigned by Messrs Savage and Fleming of the reformed “Shellen” herd at Appleby, Cumbria. Bred off an EX92 Dalena Show cow the yearling Shellan Zeebar by Duncan Barber boasted a wealth of credentials in its genetics as well as being a striking handsome animal himself. Successful purchasers were Messrs Hughes of Seaville, Silloth, Cumbria. The top price female was the fresh heifer “Farlam Yesgirls Candy” from the Thompson families noted herd. With predominately Danish sires in its recent pedigree this exceptional milky very high butterfat bred heifer was much admired and was knocked down for 1,500 gns to Dumfriesshire breeders Messr Muir of Mouswald.

Three heifers made 1150 gns including a stylish in calf heifer from the Richardsons, “Wheelbirks” herd and two fresh milkers from the Ravenfield Jerseys. These were the Champion and Reserve Champion females . Appropriately both were secured by the Judge Mrs. Jean Rawstron to join many other daisy animals that Tom and Jean have invested in recently to re build their Cardewlees Herd.

Following the Club consignment was a batch of served heifers from Island breeders Mr NH Le Quesne and Rozel Farms, which met a somewhat selective trade with three fetching over 700 gns to a top of 820 gns for an October calving daughter of Highstead Stanford Guardsman. Top price maiden was the 700 gn Rock Ella Paramount daughter from Tixhall” and with baby heifer calves selling to 400 gns (Farlam) and 300 gns (Shellan) the entire sale was considered to be a great success for vendors and purchasers alike.
