Border & Lakeland Holstein Club
Show and Sale of
Pedigree Holstein & Holstein Friesian

BULLS & FEMALES
WEDNESDAY 19th FEBRUARY 2003

Report

A most attractive variety of pedigree Holsteins, several with classy pedigrees, were catalogued for the February Border & Lakeland Show & Sale at Borderway Mart on Wednesday 19th February 2002.

The resultant excellent trade was a reflection of both the current keen demand for recently calved young cows and heifers and the quality consigned by loyal supporters of these monthly sales.
Three of the top four prices were for exceptionally well bred, well classified animals from Alan and Christine Watson of Byresteads Farm, Cockermouth, who are dispersing progressively the milking portion of their noted “Lillyhall” herd.

The top price of 3,100gns was for a homebred VG88 2nd calf cow “Redhot Roxy PI”. A granddaughter of the EX93 Tab cow Grasshill Roxanne off an Astre Starbuck dam, and by Formation, she won the show Championship and sold 10 weeks calved giving 56kgs to Messrs Dean & Andrew Anderson of the “Mayne” herd at Elgin.

Messrs Anderson also secured an early December calved heifer, Holmeden Marbuck August PI VG87 for 2,600gns. This powerful heifer is by a Starbuck x Chief Mark sire from a Mandel granddaughter of DRA August.

Bred by the Hodgson family and consigned by Alan & Christine Watson she won the Reserve Championship thereby confirming the judge, Andrew Wilson’s (Northshields) expertise in the show ring.

Two other heifers made 2,000gns one, a “Cora” (Clovermist) from the Carters noted Bricknell herd and the other, a fresh Convincer from the Watson’s.

The former Bricknell August Cora PI was yet another very stylish and dairy daughter of the Carters highly rated homebred sire Bricknell Clovermist Augusta, and was purchased by Mr W Smith, Bottoms Farm, Stewarton, Kilmarnock to join his Newsmith herd.

Leading local consignors were most appropriately the Hodgson family of “Wormanby” following their great National and Regional herd competition success. Their newly calved young heifer by Comestar Outside had just scored VG85 was knocked down for 1,700gns again to Messrs Anderson of “Mayne”.
