Following the weekly commercial sale, the Border
and Lakeland Holstein Show and Sale brought a roaring trade to Borderway
Mart.
Although entries were down a little, the quality
of heifers and young cows was most certainly on the increase! The
top price of the sale and reserve champion of the show realised
2400gns for Bricknell Mirage Ruby GP82, from the Bricknell herd
of RD Carter & Son, York. This exceptional young cow goes to
Messrs Sloan, Uppermoor, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

The overall champion, Bricknell August Sensation
GP84, brought 1,650gns from RH Carter, also from the Bricknell herd,
and joins the herd of Messrs A&C Watson, Byresteads Farm, Cockermouth,
Cumbria.
The cow class was placed as follows;
1st and reserve champion, Bricknell Mirage Ruby GP82 for RD Carter,
York,
2nd and Overall Champion Bricknell August Sensation GP84 also for
RD Carter,
3rd Gerrard Leadership Snowy 16 and 4th Gerrard Realism Jewel 52,
both being from RH Carter & Son, Gerrard House, Wigton, Cumbria.
The heifer class was placed as follows;
1st Broadlea Lee Rain for IS Duncan, Annan;
2nd Brownfield Mascot Doris 3, from RG Gemmell, Dumfries
3rd Boustead Knighthood Millie for MW & JH Gaitskell, Carlisle.
The Border and Lakeland Club Sale overall average
for 12 young cows and heifers was 1,428gns.

Unbelieve-a-bull!
That was the overall consensus of the trade at the
Evening Show and Sale of Bulls at Borderway Mart, Carlisle. A packed
sale ring created a buzzing atmosphere with buyers flocking from
as far as Somerset to Argyll.

Winnoch Ocean Blue and Wickerfield Bellringer both
topped the market at 4,600gns. Winnoch Ocean Blue, a British Friesian
sired by Catlane Corsair from the Winnoch herd of Ian Brocket, Renfrewshire
goes to Messrs JF Bowe & Sons, Calvo Silloth, Carlisle. Wickerfield
Bellringer, a Marshside Performer son, made a stir when the hammer
was dropped to Mr. JD Wharton Town Head, Tebay, Penrith.
Reserve overall champion and junior reserve champion
was Holmeden Maine PI ET, a Leduc son from J Hodgson's Holmeden
Herd, Carlisle. This bull brought 4,000gns, 3rd from top price,
and goes to Mr McLean, Balnagleck Farm, Campbelltown, Argyll.
At 3,900gns, Annandale Galileo, a Dripps Rio son,
from William Armour's Herd, Moffat, goes to Mr. D Goldie, Barnford
Farm, Dalrymple, Ayr, Ayrshire.
The special production champion and 3rd senior bull,
Gornal Black Lee, was one of the bulls in great demand, balanced
for both type and production. This bull brought 3,600 to the Gornal
Herd of DE Davies &Son, Powys.
The show, judged by John Dennison, Denmire, was a
superb turnout of both junior and senior bulls. The overall and
junior champion, receiving the Mr & Mrs TN Hill Perpetual Trophy
was a very stylish junior bull Bricknell Express a Duncan Progress
from R D Carter & Son's Bricknell Herd, in York. Bricknell Express
realised 2,100gns, and goes to GW Whitwell, Lan Shaw Farm, Austwick,
Nr Lancaster.
The senior champion was Townlaw Shergar, from The
Firm of Bryce Sloan, Ayrshire. Mr P Nicholls, Cricklake Farm, Cocklane,
Wedmore, Somerset takes him home for 1,550gns.
Reserve senior champion was awarded to J & A
Jamieson & Son, Upper Locharwoods, Dumfries, with Firth Victor,
a Moet Almira Grosvenor son. Averages for 43 Bulls - £1,802.14
