Pedigree Holstein & Holstein Friesian

BULLS & FEMALES
WEDNESDAY 17th APRIL 2002

Report
BLHBC Sale
Left to right, Ian Caddy, breeding adviser with sponsor Genus, Chris Wilson with the reserve champion, Stephen Ridley with the champion and the judge Brian Moorhouse.
A 3,400gn top price and an average of £1,300 for the first Border and Lakeland Holstein show and sale for fourteen months at Borderway Mart, Carlisle was considered by all involved to be a very decent result for a super line up of cattle.

The sale comprised a great variety of fresh and up to five months calved young cows and heifers, many sporting deep pedigrees.

Of particular interest were two exceptional consignments, one from the Wilson families ‘Stowbeck’ herd and the other from the Mitchells of Kennetsideheads.

Reserve Champion Stowbeck Formation Lorna, 3,400gns

Honours were appropriately shared between these two breeders amongst the leading prices.

At 3,400gns was a hugely admired Formation heifer from Stowbeck, 9 weeks calved and giving 36kgs daily. She was sold to Messrs J & A Barrow & Sons of Helm Farm, Ormside, Appleby.

Kinnetside Skychief Lynn
Kennetsidehead Skychief Lynn PI 4 3,000gns from J Mitchell, Eccles, Kelso

Next highest price was 3,000gns for a powerful VG88 fourth calf cow by Skychief from the PI Lynn family. Calved in November and bred back to Lyster she now joins the Dents re-established Greengill herd at Penrith.

Following the club consignment was a dispersal of the milking portion of the Caversfield herd of supplimentary registered and pedigree cows. All year calving and loose housed from Geoff and Odette Phipps, Bicester, Oxfordshire.

Champion Stowbeck Progress Trix sold for 1,600gns

The sale comprised a lot of very sensible productive cows and heifers. There were five over £1000 and were well respected by the small but serious bunch of purchasers.

Top price of 1,100gns was paid for a recently calved hefier by Double Good Sutton.

Compliments are due to all the vendors for the quality of their stock.

Averages – 18 cows in milk and in calf £1,304.92, 31 heifers in milk and in calf £1,294.89, 1 bull £1,575, Caversfield herd (66 head) £638.75.
