Invariably there is a finality with it of putting off a herd of dairy cows but it is at least some compensation if when they are sold, they sell well. Such was the case when Darnaway Holsteins herd was sold in its entirety on Wednesday 31st August 2005.

The journey from their home, near Forres, Morayshire to Carlisle was well worth making because the crowded ringside comprised a variety of buyers from the North of England, South of Scotland as well as those from Inverness area. The herd was principally of commercial pedigree breeding and so to see twenty-three cows and heifers make over 1,000gns and heifer calves making up to 550gns.

The top price was a Wa-Del Convincer daughter, Darnaway Twopenny 34. This recently calved heifer realised 1,300gns and now enters the herd of C Innes, Drumduan, Nairn. Also heading to Newmeadow Holsteins of C Innes, Drumduan, Nairn are Darnaway Helena 3 and Darnaway Joke. Darnaway Helena 3, twin to a heifer, also recently calved sold for 1,300gns. Sired by Ricecrest Brett, this heifer is giving 32.2kgs daily. Selling for 1,280gns was Darnaway Joke. Sired by Silverpost Sinatra, this recently calved heifer is also giving 34.4kgs daily.

Big volume buyer was G & J Brown, Lane End, Irthington, Carlisle who acquired 71 head for his Irthingend Herd. Leading the purchases was Darnaway Helena 2, by Ricecrest Brett. This recently calved heifer sold for 1,220gns. Also going to Lane End is Darnaway Helen 16, a Convincer daughter, selling for 1,180gns.

Darnaway Kirsty 3, in calf to Picston Shaker and due in September sold for 1,150gns. Mr John Kennedy, Perryston, Dunyre, Ayr purchased this Moet Republican daughter.
