with guest consignment from Frankham
A large crowd was in attendance at Borderway Mart for the sale to celebrate 75 years of pedigree breeding from the famous Hunday herd, owned by Messrs E.Moffitt & Son, Stocksfield, Northumberland. The auctioneers had been invited to select 75 of the best young cows in the herd for inclusion in the catalogue, and there were also some selected in calf heifers, maidens and young bulls of quality included, as well as a small consignment from Messrs E.C Spence & Sons’ Frankham herd, Fourstones, Hexham. Top price was 3,600gs given by Aubrey Greenhalgh on behalf of a client in Cheshire for Hunday Lentini Dianna 8, a VG-87 young cow in her second lactation, and the same combination were in again at 2,800gs for the 87 point 2 year old Hunday Inquirer Signet 113. Also at 2,800gs was another 87 point 2 year old Hunday Progress Victoria 17, taken by Andrew Lawrie of the Grangehall herd in Lanarkshire, and another member of the same family, Hunday Approval Victoria 15, that had been Junior Champion at last year’s Great Yorkshire Show, was sold to David McClurg, Co.Down, N.Ireland for 2,750gs to join his Fortvale herd. Members of Hunday’s branch of the famous Roxy family were keenly sought and the six month old bull calf Hunday Rooney, sired by Shoremar James, bought 2,600gs from Robert Horton, Broad Hinton, Wilts as a future stock bull in his well known Hinton herd. An undisclosed Scottish buyer took a calved heifer by Progress from the same family for 2,550gs and Wigton breeders Messrs R & A Harrison secured Hunday Lentini Roxie (VG-88) for 2,300gs to join their Hazelhead herd. Having sold many of their best young cows, Messrs Moffitt were keen to replenish stocks and gave top price in the Frankham section for Frankham Prin Pamela, a freshly calved heifer by Crichel Principal out of a Linlake dam, one of a good group of cattle purchased by Messrs Spence after losing their original herd to foot and mouth four years ago. Cattle were dispersed from Scotland to West Wales, with G & A.Linton, Lochlea Farms, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire being the biggest volume buyer with 15 head.
