£3,100 average at Wolfa Sale
A massive crowd gathered at Wolfa
on Saturday 31st July 2004 for the sale of Michael & Sue
Armstrong’s
milking herd and crop of served heifers from their noted Wolfa herd.
Following the destruction of the herd in 2001 during the foot & mouth
outbreak, Michael set about re-building from several of the breed’s
finest herds. His almost unrivalled skills and judgement were graphically
displayed with what several observers described as the best offering
of cows ever seen in a sale ring. No less than 36 Excellent and 52
VG individuals were catalogued, most of which had been purchased
as maiden heifers.

31 made over 4,000 guineas during a day of strong trading and fierce
competition. World famous cow families led the way in the top honours
(listed below) with Marsbar Convincer Raven VG-87 from the renowned
Markwell Raven family selling for 11,000 guineas to Colin Dent for
the nearby Bridge End herd. A calf from this line had sold for 8,100
guineas at the Hayleys dispersal earlier in the week and this young
cow with 4.5 fat 7 3.4 protein sold in calf for early September to
Titanic. At the same price John Loftus and family bought back Weeton
Lee Pre Oralie VG-89 to return to Weeton to join other members of
the famous Laurie Sheik family from Comestar.
The third animal to make a five figure sum was Llanbedr Geisha 5
VG-89. A much admired daughter of Ricecrest Emerson from the noted
Walkup Lou Etta family, she joins the Smiddiehill Herd in Shropshire.
The same buyers also claimed Twilight Leduc Fran VG-89, a grand-daughter
of the great Quietcove Valiant Fawn EX-95 at 9,500 guineas. Top priced
heifer was a Jordan daughter of Lee Pre Oralie which made 6,200 guineas
to Greentower Farms Ltd, while Wolfa Jordan Celicia whose dam had
made 9,000 guineas earlier in the day to John Grantchester, sold
to Designer Holsteins for 5,200 guineas.
Buyers from all over the UK attended the sale with many returning
home untrammelled despite determined bidding.
