pedigree dairy / SALE REPORT
Border & Lakeland Holstein Club

Border & Lakeland Holstein Club
Show and Sale of
Pedigree Holstein & Holstein Friesians

Wednesday 21st January 2004

Report
Holstein sale
With milk quota prices rocketing, expectations of trade for fresh cows and heifers at the monthly Border & Lakeland Holstein sale were modest.

Bearing this in mind, as well as the fact that the overall quality on offer was below the usual high standard, the trade itself was not too bad. Nearly all the animals were sold to average over £850 with a top of 2,000gns.

The leading bid secured for local breeder John Greenop of Bridgebank, Wigton, a fresh heifer by Progress from the Dellia family, and consigned by Mr Michael Waldron of Bolton House Farm, Rotherham, S.Yorkshire.

At 1,400gns was a classy heifer from the Hodgson family’s prize winning ‘Wormanby’ herd. This first prize winning daughter of Summershade Igniter was bought by Messrs Gillespie of High Ploughlands, Kirkbampton, Carlisle.

Particularly striking in the show ring, and overall champion female, was a fresh second calver from the Hunters’ Letterkenny herd near Shotts, Lanarkshire. By the Carlinside Frisky (Jim Currie & familys’ sire) the cow was off an Excellent very high butterfat 10,000kg Poppy cow.
