The Scottish Select Sale, comprising of 147 individual animals, was held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Thursday 3rd July 2003. Fourteen head brought 2,000gn bids and better up to 3,100. Knocking down the hammer were Auctioneers Edward Brown and David Jones. "This has been one of the most enjoyable and exciting sales staged at Borderway with trade being consistently high throughout," said David Jones.

Topping the Scottish Select Sale at 3,100gns was Carlinside Lee Beatexus VG85 bred and consigned by James Currie & Son. Bred from 10 generations of EX or VG cows and recently fresh into her third lactation, she enters the Bengall Herd of the Firm of R Reid, Bengal Hill, Lockerbie, Dumfries.

A descendent from the A Mil-R Mor Roxette EX family, Carlinside Mascot Roxy, and recently fresh brought 2,500gns for Messrs Dent, Greengill Farm, Greengill, Penrith. Closely followed at 2,400gns was Scotiaholm Raider Roxy VG85, a maternal sister to the dam of Carlinside Mascot Roxy, and sold into the herd of T Graham & Son, Angus well, Kirklinton, Carlisle.

Flying trade resulted in the total Carlinside consignment of 55 head averaging £1,221.51.

Also joining the Bengall herd, of the Firm of R Reid is Letterkenny Leadership Dorothy Red consigned by J&R Hunter. This In-calf Leadership daughter due in June to Carlinside Supreme realised the 2nd top price of 2,950gns. Her dam, Letterkenny Storm Dorothy Red EX90 SP, currently giving 42.2kgs in her 3rd lactation, was knocked down to Mr T Howie, Muirside Farm, Holywood for 2,800 gns.

At 2,900gns was Letterkenny Storm Oriole PI VG87 (2yr). This VG87 2 year old, sired by Maughlin Storm is potentially the 5th generation of Excellent and is bred from 4 successive generations of 75 tonne cows. She now joins the Relough Herd of Messrs R McClean & Sons, Donaghmore, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

The Overside selection of fourteen Holsteins consigned by the Firm of WW Neilson, realised the top average of £1,554.75.

Overside Ranger Beatexus recently fresh into her 2nd lactation, is bred from 10 successive generations of EX or VG cows. Currently giving 44.7kgs, she enters the Muirside herd of Mr T Howie, Holywood, Dumfries for 2,400gns.

Keith Pattinson of Ellengrove Holsteins, Walby Hall, Crosby-On-Eden, Carlisle successfully purchased Overside Storm Tina VG87 (2yr) for 2,100gns. This stylish two year old is the 6th successive generation of EX or VG cows going back to the famous Kentville Tina Red family.

The selection of Clydevalley Jerseys noted for their top yields in Scotland consigned by J&R Hunter realised tremendous demand, which was reflected in the price and overall average of £1,171.50 for 14 head.

Eight Jerseys out of fourteen realised 1,000gns and over to a top of 2,800gns.

The Reserve Champion (Heifer in Milk) and Champion Exhibitor Bred Agri Scot Nov 2002, Clydevalley Pintino Cuddle VG 86 (2yr) realised 2,800gns secured by a phone bid for Mr W McCaughern, 48 Lismoyle Road, Kilrea, Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

The Kerbanks Partnership, Bolton Cottage Farm, Bolton Low Houses, Wigton bid last at 1,300gns for Clydevalley Gunner Celia GP83. This 2nd lactation cow sired by Parkplace Berretta Gunner was 3rd (cow in milk ) at Ayr Show May 2003.

One of three at 1,100gns was, Calthwaite Carusos Viven, by Ventonwyn Caruso was knocked down to Messrs JD & ME Holgate, Hard Head Farm, Rathmell, Settle, North Yorkshire. This heifer, bred by Messrss J Pattinson & Sons, Calthwaite Penrith, she has just recently freshened and is giving 21kgs daily.

Messrs J Muir & Son, Cleughbrae Farm, Mouswald, Dumfries snapped up Mayne Juno Candarel. Sired by Valleystream JIS Juno, and bred by JD Anderson , Elgin, Morayshire, she enters her 4th lactation giving 33kgs daily.

Sired by Dymond Lester Joel, Calthwaite Joels Luita, a 2nd calver also at 1,100gns was successfully purchased by an undisclosed buyer.
