The Mull of Kintyre may not be neither the most accessible part of the country nor the easiest of areas to milk pedigree Holstein and Jersey cattle but Matthew and Catherine Ralston have succeeded in breeding, managing and developing their “Rhoin” herd with great credit. Much respected locally, the herd is very soundly bred, the features including longevity, high quality of milk, good calving index, popular sires, decent production and sound type.

The milking portion dispersal in Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday, 21st November attracted a variety of pedigree and commercial buyers from Inverness to Yorkshire. The top bid of 2,200 gns secured for West Cumbrian breeder P Sherwen of the Scawfell herd a very classy September calved fourth lactation Rudolph cow, “Rhoin Rudolph Cindy”. Although the herd is not classified this cow has many local, Kintyre, show credits to her name. Amongst the other leading prices were a lovely February calving Dombinator 2nd calver (1300 gns) and several very promising milking heifers by Silky Gibson.

One of the features of the sale was the batch of 19 Jersey cows and heifers. Their quality was respected with three making over 1,000 gns to a top of 1,150 gns for a fourth calved half Danish cow with 6.21% BF and a lot of milk. Holstein heifer calves too were in demand with several over 500 gns to a top of 700 gns.
