| On Wednesday 10th December a large crowd of commercial buyers from all over the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland turned out and bid keenly for good quality, milk recorded commercial Holsteins from Monktonhill, Ayrshire. There was an extremely good quality catalogued entry of 50 cattle for the December 17th Border & Lakeland Club Show and Sale. The one or two consignors who were not forward will have missed out on an extremely buoyant trade because buyers were astute and respectful of the young cows and heifers present. report A full house at Borderway, witnessed one of the most exciting events in the Holstein calendar and experienced an electric atmosphere throughout the whole duration of this 2003 Black & White Sale. The Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Show and Sale on Wednesday 26th November attracted the largest entry this year and was augmented by nearly 100 head of pedigree cows and heifers from the Margil Herd. The milking portion dispersal of the Rhoin Herd of pedigree Holstein Friesian and Jersey cattle in Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday, 21st November attracted a variety of pedigree and commercial buyers from Inverness to Yorkshire. The dispersal of the Barrina Herd took place on Thursday 20th November at Burley Road Farm, Sixpenny Handley, Salisbury, Wiltshire, where a packed ringside created a fine atmosphere and an excellent trade throughout for Messrs. B.G. & G.M. Green. Top price at the Cumrew pedigree Holstein dispersal sale for Messrs Metcalfe and Sons, on 9th October was 5,000gns for the VG87 heifer in milk Cumrew Journalist Debra. The dispersal sale of the Watsome Herd of Pedigree Holsteins took place on Tuesday 23rd September on the farm at Charfield, Gloucestershire for Messrs. R. G. Bennett & Son. More than 300 head of Pedigree Holstein and Friesian dairy cattle were catalogued for sale at The Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Show and Sale on Wednesday 10th September. report One of the most stylish productive and respected Holstein herds in the Borders came under the hammer on Thursday, 28th August when the Bridgemuir Herd was dispersed. The Gold Top sale at Borderway Mart, on 27th August saw one of the largest entries ever of Pedigree Jersey cattle at this annual collective event. Following the Border & Lakeland Club Sale on Wednesday 20th August was the dispersal sale of the well-bred Tardoes Herd for MA Simpson, East Raws, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Buyers and friends from Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland jostled in the large crowds and competed strongly with keen local breeders when the synonymous Farleton Herd went under the hammer on Friday 15th August 2003. The Eleventh Show & Sale of Pedigree Red & White cattle on Wednesday 13th August 2003 brought both an impressive show of good quality coloured cattle and spectators to Borderway Mart. A 14,000 gns headline price was top call at the Lillyhall Sale held at Borderway on Wednesday 6th August 2003 for Messrs A & C Watson, Cockermouth. Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly dairy sale again combined most successfully with the monthly Pedigree Show and Sale for the Border & Lakeland Holstein Breeders Club on 16th July. report The Scottish Select Sale, comprising of 147 individual animals, was held on Thursday 3rd July 2003. Fourteen head brought 2,000gn bids and better up to 3,100. Ian Wakley from Aberdeenshire moved his high yielding Walescot Herd to Borderway Mart in Carlisle, for the dispersal of the milking portion on June 18th. An exceptionally good quality line up of fresh heifers and young cows was consigned for the Border & Lakeland Holstein Breeders Club on 18th June. report A huge crowd gathered for the dispersal of the noted Janhaven Herd of Jerseys on behalf of Mr Jim Irving on Saturday 17th May 2003 with purchasers from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland participating in the days bidding. A large entry of good quality young cows and heifers were in much demand and met a very good trade at the Border & Lakeland Club Show & sale held on Wednesday 14th May. report An enthusiastic crowd of buyers gathered for the 2003 Brown Swiss Society Sale on Friday 2nd May 2003, travelling from as far away as Lancashire and Cornwall in the search of the genetics on offer. Brown Swiss The Auchengree Dispersal sale, comprising 222 Holstein Friesians, was held at Borderway on Wednesday 23rd April. With demand remaining strong the trade saw 12 animals at 1,350gns and better, up to 3,000gns. The Lakes Counties Jersey Cattle Club hosted the Seventh Spring Gold Top Sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Wednesday 23rd April 2003. This, being the first sale since 2000, realised a tremendous trade for 30 pedigree Jerseys. The Border & Lakeland Club Show & Sale held on Wednesday 9th April attracted a good quality show of fresh young cows and heifers. report The Valeoskene Dispersal Sale, comprising 143 individual animals, was held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Wednesday 9th April 2003. Messrs Dawson of Parkburnfoot dispersed their commercial Holstein Friesian herd and followers on Wednesday 26th March 2003. At the Border & Lakeland Club Show & Sale held on Wednesday 19th March the trade although less predictable than has been the recent trend was fine with virtually every animal forward being sold to average a most satisfactory £1,150. The milking portion of the Ingst Herd of Registered and Non-Registered Holsteins were dispersed at the Bristol Sales Centre on 27th February 2003, to a keen audience when John Harding decided to cease milk production in the UK and emigrate to Austrailia. A most attractive variety of pedigree Holsteins, several with classy pedigrees, were catalogued for the Border & Lakeland Show & Sale on Wednesday 19th February. Borderway Mart hosted a successful pedigree show and sale on Wednesday 15th January. The show was judged by Mr David Inman from the Witherslack herd, Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria. The sale, a good turnout of young cows and heifers, realised a consistent and competitive trade. <<back |
