THE BRIDGEMUIR DISPERSAL SALE
on behalf of
JA BEATTIE & SONS
Bridgemuir, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire
Thursday 28th August 2003
One of the most stylish productive and respected Holstein herds in
the Borders came under the hammer on Thursday, 28th August.
The Beattie family’s “Bridgemuir” herd was dispersed
on the farm near Lockerbie, Dumfries thus bringing to an end sixty
five years of devoted
skilful breeding and farming dairy cattle.
The herd boasted many very attractive qualities; powerful lasting cows with
excellent udders, legs and feet, overall type and good production, and was
entirely homebred.
In fact, very few cows have been bought in ever, thus proving that one does
not need a mass of PIs and imports to produce a modern dairy herd that was
so much
admired.
It was fitting, therefore, that the sale was very well attended and that the
trade throughout rewarding for the owners. In particular demand were the followers
from served heifers downwards, as the average will show but the quality of
the cows plus the use of popular sires and service bulls such as Gibson, Cousteau,
Jed Juror, Igniter, Jordan, Stormatic and so on obviously inspired much confidence
in the purchasers, The top price of 3,100 gns was for a VG86 Storm heifer due
in October with her second calf and from the Bridge End Marlene family purchased
by Mr B Lilburn, Hillcrest Farm, 204 Ballygowan, Northern Ireland. She was
one
of many animals of all ages to go to Northern Ireland.
Included in the sale was the remaining unselected batch of in calf heifers
from Allan Beatties Millantae herd nearby. These too attracted much interest
and averaged £1,031
selling to a top of 1,400 gns for a Startmore Supreme daughter.
