DISPERSAL OF THE HETTON & HOLBORN PEDIGREE & COMMERCIAL HOLSTEIN DAIRY HERDS AND FOLLOWERS

Sale report

They say that size doesn’t matter but it certainly paid off when Harrison & Hetherington Ltd conducted what was said to be the largest one day dispersal of milk recorded Holstein Dairy Cattle within Borderway Mart, Carlisle in conjunction with John Swan & Sons PLC.

The cattle were combined from two almost identical herds and followers which came from Hetton Estate Farms and were sold on behalf of Lilburn Estates Farming Partnership who had very recently purchased Hetton and decided to cease milk production.

The herds which were commercially bred and managed were producing about 8,500kgs at goof butterfat and protein and both enjoyed low cell counts and were cubicle housed. There is no doubt that Andrew Templeton the principal auctioneer on the day was very pleased with how the days trade had gone,

“A lot of people had expressed reservations as to whether we would succeed in getting through over 500 head but our belief and determination proved a valuable point, namely that numbers attract buyers and also that I really believe that Borderway Mart is the place to sell dairy cattle. With sensible bidding from buyers from the North of England and Southern Scotland, it was pleasing to see that over thirteen young cows and heifers made over £1,000 with two animals reaching £1,200. Every single animal was sold and to average over £600 for cows which where all year calving is extremely satisfying."
