HOLMEDEN SPRING SELECTION SALE
Report of Holstein Cattle for John Hodgson & family FRIDAY 22nd MARCH 2002
The first pedigree dairy cattle sale in Carlisle on Friday March 22 drew the crowds and attracted sound prices which peaked at 4,600gns. Restrictions imposed last year because of foot and mouth led to the sale of cattle from the Holmeden herd run by John and Margaret Hodgson and sons Ian and Richard at Holmes Mill, Burgh-by-Sands. Their consignment was joined in the ring by cattle from Gerald Carter's Bricknell herd from Fangfoss, York. Topping the sale at 4,600gns was a heifer calf from the Holmeden herd by Convincer from the Martha family, Holmeden Convincer M Martha, purchased by George and Brian Moorhouse of the Aireburn herd at Skipton.
The joint second highest price and also the Bricknell consignment's top price at 4,400gns was a second calved cow by Jolt from the Ruby family. Bricknell Jolt Ruby was bought by Edward Wilson and family, of the Highoaks herd, at Calthwaite. Five lots made 4,000gns and more with three from the Holmeden herd and two> from Bricknell and honours being shared. The Holmeden herd averaged £2,123 for 56 females sold one by one with six bulls levelling at £1,645 and the Bricknell herd's 31 cattle averaged £2,513.
