for D Steel, Wintermuir Farm, Biggar, Lanark.

A respected breeder dispersing a good herd of cows and followers invariably was sensibly rewarded.

Clydemuir SaleSuch was the case at the David Steel and family’s sale of their entire Clydemuir herd of pedigree Holsteins. The Steels’ brought their 9,500 kg herd from the Wintermuir Farm, Biggar, to the Borderway Mart, thus combining the competition of strength of buyers from both sides of the border.

In particular demand were the very stylist recently calved young cows & heifers, and the young stock. The average of just over £1,000 a head reflected a very consistent and serious trade throughout.

Three animals, all recently calved heifers made over £2,200gns. This bid secured for Mr. McCulloch of Low Weirston, Leswalt, Stranaer, a gorgeous fresh Shoremar Mason heifer out of a high component 9,000kg EX90 cow by Sunnlodge Linjet from the Betsy family.

At £2,300gns was an equally stylist Anna heifer by Comestar Outside having calved in July. The buyer, via a telephone bid, was well known Fife breeder, Andrew Wilson of Carskaroo Farm, Cupar.

The other leading price of £2,200gns was for another summer calved Mason heifer from the Hyacinth family, and off a VG Linjet cow. She now joins the Messrs Howie’s herd at Muirside, Dumfries.

The heifer calves following dams were without exception very keenly wanted with many making between 450 and 500gns.

Other leading prices – Lot 80 £1,700gns to Messrs H&G Mair, Townhead Farm, Mouswald, Dumfries; Lot 45 £1,650gns to Firm of RF Forsyth, Baltier, Whithorn, Newtownstewart, Wigtownshire; Lot 43 £1,400gns to LD & MA Clarke & Sons, Brown House Farm, Thorton in Craven, Skipton; Lot 113 £1,400gns to Messr J Adamson & Son, Swaits, Pettinain, Lanark; Lot 112 £1,350gns to Messrs B & V Davidson, Errolston, Gretna, Dumfriesshire.

The average for 61 cows and heifers in milk and or in calf realised £1003.55. Heifers in calf averaged £866.53 for 38 head. Bulling, maiden and heifer calves averaged £520.80 for 25 head.
