16th Borderway Black & White Sale
Saturday 30th November 2002

The long time ante-post favourite for top price lived up to all expectations at the 16th Borderway Black & White Sale at H&H’s Carlisle Livestock Centre.

Pverside Ford Delight ET
Overside Ford Delight ET

“Overside Ford Delight ET” an eleven month heifer calf, from Dellia’s family, bred by Hugh Neilson, at his family farm near Strathaven, is one of the most talked about calves in top Holstein breeding circles.

Her dam is believed to be one of the world’s finest heifer daughters of Wa-Del Convincer and has international embryo contracts on her, and attracts a lot of serious interest from Cogent and Genus, as well as European AI studs.

Her Gdam, who has graced National Show rings this winter is considered by many to be one of Fatal’s best daughters, and recently scored EX93. The calf’s Italian sire, Alzi Juror Ford is a high production and high type sire. Bidding started at 5,000 gns and ended successfully for the purchaser Mr Isaac Lancaster, Lickber Holsteins, of Horton in Craven, Skipton, North Yorkshire at 13,000gns.

These were not the only success stories of the Black & White Sale however. Consigned by Indianhead Holsteins was Indianhead Durham Karyn, sold for 5,800gns to the Mikali herd of D & P Coombes,High Banks , Avoncastle, Ringwood, Hants. Karyn, in calf to Comestar Stormatic, was a beautiful powerful heifer from Leadman’s family.

From Amercia’s D-R-A August’s family, a beautiful, red VG86 2 year old, Kepculloch Ruben August Red, from R Steel & Son, Balfron, Glasgow. Also selling for 5,800gns she enters the Whitadder herd of T Hodge, Rulesmains, Duns, Berwickshire.

For an August born baby from Stormatic’s family, Wiltor Boss Lausine, topped at 5,400gns for David & Claire Jones of the Wiltor herd, Monmouthshire. A partnership of Messrs Bell & Fisher of Forest Hill, Bowscar, Penrith and Yanwath, Woodhouse, Penrith respectively are the new owners of this stylish show calf.

David Jones, auctioneer, acclaimed breeder and judge, was on blistering form in the rostrum and was unable to conceal his delight with the event as a whole.

“There is no doubt that the B&W is the flagship of the very best of Holstein breeding it has endured the up’s & down’s of the UK’s dairy farming industry for sixteen years like a well found ship.”
“This years sale was special for many reasons. It was the best catalogue of world famous pedigrees possibly ever in the UK. Most of the animals were exceptionally good in their own right. The vendors were sensible and realistic in their expectations, and much credit must be given to them for sending heifers that they would dearly love to keep.”
“The buyers were astute and not shy to invest hard earned money in class. The B&W has earned a great reputation for its genuineness – that is one of the reasons it exists.”

On Saturday, we had 22 heifers making 3,000gns or more sold nearly 90%, averaged over £2,500 and I hope, sent the message out that we, in the UK, have the best there is anywhere.
“As far as I am concerned, this has to be one of the best sales ever and we shall be planning next year’s next week,” quotes Edward Brown, auctioneer.
