SALE REPORT

A highly successful sale of Simmental cattle at Carlisle on Friday 26th April saw a top price of 4000 gns paid for Stirling Lancer 2 by Major Walters of Perth.

Simmental SaleSterling Lancer 2 is a son of Starling Flint and was bred by Boddington Estates at Cheltenham, Glouctershire. With a Beef Value of SM 28, he stood Reserve Champion on the day.

Overall, champion, Annanwater Luke, was brought out by a new member to the breed, Mr BK Ryder from Moffat in Dumfriesshire. The purchaser was Simmental breeder Mr David Lowry from Cartland, Lanarkshire. Mr Lowry moved to the holding from Co. Down, Northern Ireland some 18months ago.

Champion Female was Wishful Lavender from Mrs C Mills at Wellington in Somerset. This exceptionally well-grown heifer paraded with style, reflecting her breeding as she in a daughter of the successful show cow, Greenside Amanda and is sired by Sacombe Wishful Thinking. Paying 2600gns to acquire her was Mr Alan Tallentire from Appleby, Cumbria, a former Simmental breeder re-stocking after loosing his herd last year.

“This was one of several purchases by farmers in the Cumbrian area who are re-stocking and it was particularly pleasing to welcome a number of new purchasers from the region to the Simmental breed. In total, we had 16 purchasers from Cumbria and Dumfriesshire,” commented Roger Trewhella, general secretary of the British Simmental Cattle Society.
“This was the most successful Simmental sale at Carlisle for several years” continued Roger Trewhella. “It reflects the increasing demand for Simmentals amongst suckler herd owners who are embarking on a closed herd policy. This trend was apparent amongst both bull and females buyers on the day.”

In total, 24 bulls were sold to level at £1660. One hundred and forty three females were traded, this total included 42 lots from the Ravensworth herd of Messers Will and Snowden Oates at Ouston Farms, Chester le Street, Co. Durham, 34 lots from the Fole herd of Mr Joe Ede Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

Fole Dior 7 has a Beef Value of SM 31, putting her in the top 1% of the breed, plus above average Calving Milk EBV’s.
“The Fole Herd has been developed on high performance criteria, and its value has been recognised at this sale,” explained Roger Trewhella. This herd has produced 14 bulls for the Promising Young Bull listing and has consistently has cows in the Top 100 List within the breed.
