Top Bid for Hafodlas Vodka

Hafodlas Vodka
Hafodlas Vodka

A top bid of 5,200gns for the April 2004 born bull calf Hafodlas Vodka from Messrs AW & GW Roberts, Ysbyty Ifan, Betws-Y-Coed led the Limousin Youngstock Sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Wednesday 25th May 2005. With quality consignments from the Beck, Central, Cracrop, Felin, Hafodlas & Hudscales herds, this annual event drew a good crowd and bidding was brisk with 43 of the 54 lots forward selling at a clearance rate of 80%.

May was rounded off in style for the Roberts Family who had triumphed at the Limousin Bull Sale also at Carlisle on Saturday 7th May with a sale-topping 19,000gns for the much admired Hafodlas Valour as well as taking Reserve Supreme Overall with the 9,000gns Hafodlas Vance, an embryo calf by Broadmeadows Cannon and out of Holly Fool. Holly Fool was once again dam to this Sale topper, Hafodlas Vodka, who was sired by Cloughead Royal; he heads back home to Wales to HT Price, Cefn Naw Clawdd, Cwm Hafoddoer, Dolgelleu.

Two further lots presented by the Roberts went under the hammer for 2,600gns and 2,200gns respectively: both of them eagerly-anticipated sons of the French import Saphir. Out of Grange Nuala was the aptly named Hafodlas Vuala who sold to WB & SA Steele, Easthwaite Farm, Wasdale, Cumbria for 2,600gns. Hafodlas Vernon, out of homebred dam Hafodlas Meleri, was knocked down to L Bamforth & Sons, Hoyle Bottom Farm, Wainstalls, Halifax for 2,200gns.

The Hudscales consignment from Messrs W&A Cowx, Hesket-New-Market, Cumbria saw 11 bulls average an impressive £1,532. Top of the bunch was the 3,100gns Hudscales Volvo, a rising yearling bull by Hudscales Rambler and out of Redrock Lambrussco, sporting a beef value of LM+30. Purchaser was W&I Coulthard & Son, Davy Gill, Croglin, Carlisle. JJ Templeton, Airtnoch, Fenwick, Ayrshire paid 2,800gns for Hudscales VIP, a Marron son and out of homebred dam Hudscales Sunflower. Selling at 2,000gns was Hudscales Vladimer, a son of Muirhouse Lagonda and out of Hudscales Maxine. New owners are AE Iceton & Sons, High Birkhatt, Barnard Castle, Co Durham.

Beck Vivian led the heifer consignment from Mr W Hickson, Knarrside Farm, Skipton Old Road, Colne, Lancs. In all, 6 heifers averaged £1,225, with Vivian, a 13 month old Mas Du Clo daughter and out of Beck Martha, selling at 3,000gns to A&JA Iveson, East Shaw, Gayle, N Yorks.
