29 bull calves at £1,832 27 heifer calves at £1,583

of Montgomery, Powys.

Prices topped out at a fantastic 7,100gns for the seven
month old, April born bull calf, Sarkley Valiant, with buyers clamouring for
new bloodlines from the bull Rocky, a Jacot son and half brother to Rossignol
who made 13,000gns in February 2003. Out of the Uplands Batman daughter, Sarkley
Olette, he sold into Brian Hall’s Ainstable Hall herd, Carlisle, Cumbria.
In all, seven calves made 3,000gns and above.
Second top price was the January born bull, Sarkley Volt, a son of the prolific
Goldies Oswald and out of home bred Sarkley Rosanne. Messrs KD Harryman, Newlands
Valley, Cumbria and G Wilson, Wreay, Cumbria purchased him jointly for 4,600gns.
Five further bulls reached the 3,000 mark or above with the following lot Sarkley
Volvo going under the hammer for 3,800gns. Sired by French bull Ionesco and
out of dam Holly Jen, whose bull calf Sarkley Unlimited made 5,800gns in last
year’s
sale, he has a beef value of LM31 and sold to W Barron, Burnhope, Co Durham
joining his Barrons pedigree herd.
Messrs Hodgson Bros snapped up Sarkley Vittorio, another April born Goldies Oswald
son, this time out of Sarkley Sunita. 3,500gns was the price paid to join their
Hodgsons herd at Rydal Farm, Ambleside.
The Evans herd of Halmyre, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrighgtshire gained a new recruit
in the form of Jockey son, Sarkley Vainqueur, once more April born and out of
dam Sarkley Judy. Vainqueur is a full brother to Sarkley Ragtime who sold to
20,000gns at Carlisle in May 2002. He was bought by N Evans for 3,400gns.
Snapping at the heels of Vainqueur was Sarkley Vegas who made 3,300gns. Sired
by Hartside Hensingham and out of one of the herd’s top-breeding cows,
Sarkley Mavis, a Ronick Gains daughter, he has an EBV of LM36 putting him in
the top 1% of breed. Final bidder for this excellent calf was RE Williamson,
Hamsterley, Co Durham.
The heifers on offer also provided a brisk trade with four calves making between
2,800 and 3,100gns. The Pennies underlined the confidence they have in their
breeding stock by presenting many heifers together in the ring “paired” whereby
the successful purchaser chooses one, with the other being retained by the
vendor. MT Abberley, Brecon, Powys paid 3,100gns for Sarkley Verbena, a May
born Cannon
daughter out of Sarkley Narcissus and 2,800gns for Sarkley Ugenie, by Nobel
and out of Sarkley Nathalie, who now both join their Hemley Hall herd.
Sarkley Velveteen, a heifer by Ronick Gains and out of Sarkley Venrietta, made
2,900gns and heads to Coleraine, N Ireland to join P Smyth’s herd with
the Aghadowey prefix. Sarkley Vatella was knocked down to Messrs Ridley, Hesket
Newmarket, Cumbria for 2,800gns. A Nenuphar daughter and out of home bred dam
Sarkley Ruella, she heads to their renowned Haltcliffe herd.
