Pedigree Calf Sale 19 SELL AT 3,000GNS AND MORE AT PRODUCTION SALE
The sale for the Sarkley herd for Glyn and Liz Pennie and sons Chris and Nigel, of Gwern-Yr-Chain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys, peaked at 5,100gns for their 22 month old heifer Sarkley Sophie which sold to an undisclosed buyer. Sophie is by Hengrave Trooper and out of Sarkley Oralia. The Pennies, who sold 27 bulls to average £1,353.33 and 38 heifers to average £1,739.41, with seven lots at 3,000gns and more, were joined in the sale ring by an annual consignment from Stephen and Helen Illingworth, of Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie. Next in line and early in the catalogue at 3,700gns for the Sarkley herd – which broke the centre record at the Carlisle May 2002 sale when their 21 month old bull Sarkley Ragtime sold for 20,000gns – was an 11 month old bull calf, Sarkley Supercharge which sold to fellow Welsh breeders TM Joseph & Sons, Willoxton Farm, Ilston, Swansea. The Heros-sired bull with tremendous conformation has a beef value of LM30, putting him into the top 10 per cent of the breed. His dam Sarkley Joanna also bred the successful show cow Sarkley Nana whose first heifer calf was sold for 1,500gns at the December 2000 calf sale. Close behind at 3,600gns was the seven month old heifer Sarkley Stella selling to JT Nixon & Sons, of Stotsfold Farm, Steel, Hexham, Northumberland. A huge heifer with exceptional power, Stella is a typical Ronick Gains daughter of the well fleshed cow Sarkley Melody, a daughter of an exceptional cow bred at Sarkley, Finesse. It was another bull which brought the next leading price at 3,400gns. One of the best shaped calves bred at Sarkley, the seven month old Sarkley Tango by Mythe was bought by GEH Stoddart, of Hill Side, Wigton, Cumbria. Three other animals from Sarkley made 3,000gns. Sarkley Sara, a seven month daughter of Bapton Javelin the Genus AI bull with a beef value of LM 40, sold to GR Jones, of Tyn Rhos, Llanrhaedr YM, Oswestry, Powys. Sara has a beef value of LM33. The Rake Terence daughter Sarkley Tracie, aged eight months, sold to Nether Hall Farm, Mansergh, Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire, for 3,000gns. Tracie’s dam Pastille is full sister to Sarkley Nellie, champion at the Carlisle Red Ladies Day in 1999 which sold for 9,000gns. Also at 3,000gns was another seven month old heifer, Sarkley Toriana. Her dam Sarkley Oriana is a successful show cow. She has a beef value of LM 22 and sold to RA Walker, of Elm Tree, Asby, Appleby, Cumbria. The Illingworths’ top price of 1,100gns was for an seven month old heifer, Glenrock Temptation, full brother to Glenrock OJ which sold at Carlisle for 8,400gns in 2000, by Tygwyn Picalo our of Glenrock Princess. Purchaser was PM Howey, of Barrascrofts, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. At 1,000gns for the Illingworths was the seven month old bull calf Glenrock Tictak by the French bred Marquis which consistently breeds well muscled, lengthy calves.
